The Extrusion Process Leader reports to the Extrusion Manager and will assist Supervisors in leading crews, with up to 30 direct reports. This position is responsible for the safe operation, quality of material, and productivity of the extrusion presses during a shift and will not only lead and manage in a professional and capable manner but will also participate directly on the plant floor.

These are general duties considered necessary to describe the principle functions of the job as identified and shall not be considered as the detailed job description of all the work requirements that may be inherent.

Essential duties and responsibilities*:

  • Must drive a safety culture where safety is the number one priority for all employees.

  • Follow all safety protocol. Lead by example and hold your crew accountable to do the same

  • Encourage team to complete STOP observations as scheduled or expected. Coach them on quality, not quantity

  • Assist in the new hire on boarding and follow up processes. Complete touch audits on all new hires and transfers

  • Hold crews accountable to the department housekeeping standards

  • Exhibit and live the Sapa Values as part of doing business. Support short and long-term goals, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) strategies

  • Distribute and manage PPE inventory levels

  • Lead and coach team members in improvement activities i.e. 5S, MDI (Managing Daily Improvements), PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act), Kaizen events and Development of Standardized Work, that supports the Genesis continuous improvement business system.

  • Audit pre-and post-shift meetings. Provide support and follow up on items as needed

  • Perform regular shift meetings for communication of shift goals and results and to perform required safety training

  • Perform administrative tasks and maintain administrative records for the shift, including required production reporting, IMS system entries and follow up, training needs and skills assessments, time and attendance, disciplinary action, performance management, and payroll forms

  • Value Our People – coach, teach, and develop them

  • Prioritize shift assignments and available staffing/coverage in order to meet shift safety, quality, and efficiency goals

  • Foster an environment where employees will willingly make extra effort to exceed goals

  • Perform coaching of employees for development, recognition, reward, or unacceptable performance or attendance

  • Encourage a sense of urgency amongst your teams without sacrificing safety or quality. Push teams to achieve targets

  • Review internal scrap and customer complaint reports daily. Create and assign actions. Hold crews accountable

  • Review hold report in the AS400 daily and assign ownership. Monitor completion

  • Assist the Process Technician in training and developing TMs skill levels

  • Review material awaiting age and schedule special heat treat cycles as needed

  • Monitor and communicate rack needs for the department

  • Monitor and enforce press schedule conformance

  • Maximize extrusion productivity, flow of extruded products to downstream customers, and delivery performance while minimizing extrusion’s costs and quality problems as measured by process scrap and recovery

  • Ability to measure parts, as needed, with various tools and/or gages to determine part conformity to the print.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

Safety Must have a passion around safety.  Must drive a safety culture where safety is number one priority for all employees. Comply with Health, Safety & Environmental requirements Abide by company rules and policies and procedures. Understands that performing job tasks in a safe manner is the highest priority. May be asked to participate in accident/incident reviews and develop corrective actions. Responsible for housekeeping and 5S in his or her respective area of work or areas as directed by the departmental manager. Work Experience 5 + years’ successful manufacturing experience 1-3 years’ successful leadership or supervisor experience a plus Previous aluminum extrusion experience a plus Expert level of competence with metrology tools (Calipers, Height Gages, etc.). Must be able to stand or sit for extended period Moderate frequency of: bending, reaching, grasping, lifting 5-25 pounds Limited frequency of: pushing, pulling, lifting over 25 pounds Must have necessary hearing, vision, speech to perform all functions of job Education and Technical A post-secondary degree preferred, but not required. Basic mechanical components/aptitude Ability to interpret blueprints Familiar with Six Sigma or lean manufacturing methodologies a plus Ability to work in a fast-paced environment Strong computer skills Proficient in MS Office computer skills Functional Knowledge and People Management Ability to understand production goals and hit targets Lean/Continuous Improvement practical application preferable Proven ability to lead and direct others Meticulous attention to detail and an innate knack to research and solve problems Must be able to work any shift as required Must be able to organize and manage multiple tasks Strong analytical skills Professional demeanor and strong communication skills both written and verbal Team player; Self-starter; Adaptable to change Language Ability to communicate effectively with fluency in English; any other languages a plus
