Job Description

Position Function:

The Reading specialist provides support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for educating students struggling in the area of reading; develop lesson plans and deliver group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; gather data to develop instruct based on students’ academic needs; collaborate with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; develop, monitor, and report progress on educational goals/objectives developed in an individualized Education Program; and respond to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.

Essential Job Functions:

Major Highlights of the position requirements are noted below. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as required.

  • Provide reading specialist sessions for grades 6-12.
  • Plan developmental programs in reading for students.
  • Develop individualized and/or group instruction to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Recommend methods and materials to be used in regular education classrooms tailored to students reading needs.
  • Assists classroom teachers in the diagnosis of students and collaborates in planning the instructional strategies.
  • Assist classroom teachers in the diagnosis of students and collaborates in planning the instructional strategies.
  • Assist in development of and provide continued support in students’ individual Education Programs(IEP’s).
  • Willing to accept responsibilities beyond regular classroom duties.
  • Serves as a resource to and administration in areas of reading instructions and curriculum.
  • Provide evidence-based decision making and accountability.
  • Administer and develop subject specific assessments for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plans.
  • Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations; student’s achievements; developing methods for improvement.
  • Assess student progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration.
  • Collaborate with instructional team members, other personnel, parents and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
  • Demonstrate and differentiate methods required to perform classroom and/or subject specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective program (regular education/special education).
  • Manage student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Monitor students in a variety of educational environment (e.g. classroom, school grounds, hallways, restrooms, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Commit to a variety of meetings and professional development activities for the purpose of continuous improvement.
  • Prepare a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, lesson plans following scope and sequences, correspondence with parents and students, examinations and quizzes, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Report incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, harassment, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive and safe learning environment and adhering to state law.
  • Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Impeccable inter/intrapersonal skill base with colleagues/children.
  • Collaborate with team members to discuss student work, share best practices, plan event for joy and humor, and ensure student mastery of standards.
  • Legal, ethical, and professional practices in compliance with federal and state mandates, as well as local policies concerning performance.

Job Requirements

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Pennsylvania Special Education Certification K-12.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Wilson Certified preferred.
  • Related reading teaching experience working with under-served communities.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Valid driver’s license from the state in which you reside in and proof of car insurance.
  • Outstanding personal/interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to keep concise records.
  • Sensitivity to the developmental stages and well-being of children
  • Willingness to be flexible in terms of teaching assignment within the education program.
