Yamaha Guitar Group is a leading designer/manufacturer of innovative & high-tech guitar & bass products under the Line 6, Ampeg & Yamaha brands. We are looking for an experienced & motivated Manager of Hardware Engineering to join the team! This person will lead the group that designs, develops, integrates, and tests high-tech electronics for a broad range of analog/digital signal processing & musical instrument products, including effects processors, audio amplifiers, computer interfaces, etc.

The Manager of Hardware Engineering is a people-leadership position in a creative, fun, and driven work environment. This Role will be hybrid based from our Calabasas office and the applicant must live close enough to commute on a weekly basis

Your expertise and leadership will be required to perform the following functions:


  • Formulate, plan and execute a long-term vision for the Hardware Engineering group.
  • Lead, mentor & motivate the hardware engineering staff to ensure all hardware technology & development goals can be met in support of company business objectives.
  • Draw upon an extensive background in electrical hardware development to drive continuous improvement of all existing hardware development processes & documentation. Create new processes & documentation, as needed, to improve efficiencies and achieve the highest levels of electrical performance, regulatory compliance & quality in all new designs.
  • Ensure that appropriate hardware engineering resources are available to deliver new designs and support ongoing manufacturing within the given schedule & cost constraints.
  • Embrace the use of outside hardware engineering resources, as needed, to supplement internal resources & maximize development productivity.
  • Develop, coach & manage the hardware engineering staff by understanding their skills, work styles & personalities and setting clear expectations in a positive, supportive & inclusive work environment.
  • Support the performance review process & provide effective feedback to both staff & management.
  • Recruit, hire & develop new talent to improve technical capabilities and expand workload capacity.
  • Partner as necessary with teams in Japan and China to collaborate on projects.

What you Bring to the table


  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.
  • 15+ years experience in electrical hardware development, including digital, analog, and mixed-signal electronics. Experience in audio hardware is definitely a plus.
  • 5+ years experience leading a hardware engineering staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to build, lead & manage high-functioning design/technical teams.
  • Proven senior-level hardware engineering experience in areas such as:
  • Product requirements analysis & hardware system architecture definition.
  • New product electrical design, including circuit design, component selection, schematic entry, PCB layout, design reviews & prototype bring-up/troubleshooting.
  • Electrical performance testing & design verification.
  • Creation of hardware development schedules & task breakdowns.
  • Creation of accurate design documentation, including theories of operation, test reports, bills of material, etc.
  • Compliance with applicable worldwide electromagnetic and safety standards.
  • Development of production test fixtures for PCBA and product final test.
  • Support at manufacturing sites, both for new product ramp-up and ongoing production.
  • Strong collaborator with other Engineering disciplines as well as product owners/managers, project management, quality etc.
  • Working knowledge of hardware and software development tools, including electromagnetic and thermal simulation.
  • Ability to accurately provide development time/resource estimates for a given set of technical/project requirements.
  • Knowledge of product development methodologies, including Waterfall, Agile/Scrum.
  • Ability to manage multiple development priorities in ambiguous situations, meet aggressive deadlines, work extended hours (as needed).
  • Ability to analyze a multitude of technical issues and find effective, practical solutions quickly.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Musical background is a plus.
