Position Summary:

Administers, directs, and coordinates all activities of the United Way in order to carry out its objectives for the provision of human services, in accordance with the policies adopted by the Board of Directors.  Responsible for managing and directing staff employed by the corporation.

 

Dimensions:

Is responsible for all aspects of the administration of an approximate $600,000 annual campaign, manages the Community Initiative Fund, and works directly with all Agency Boards and Directors.  Maintains contacts with local community leaders and media.  Keeps United Way Officers and Board aware of all pertinent aspects of local human service needs and United Way business.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  1. Formulates and leads community campaign within the framework of a volunteer structure to raise necessary funds to address emerging needs.

  2. Provides guidance and support to Vision Councils as well as participating in Vision Council planning and discussions.  Works with Community Impact volunteer leadership to plan and implement annual funding process as part of the overall scope of the Vision Councils.

  3. Responsible for the operation of the United Way office for the transmitting, interpreting, and implementation of rules, regulations, and policies, makes recommendations for policy modifications, and for liaison among the Board of Directors, Agency Personnel, Governmental Departments, and Citizens of Wayne and Union Counties, Indiana.

  4. Formulates and maintains an effective program of year-round marketing along with Marketing Committee and Board of Directors.  This involves explaining human service delivery costs and functions to the public, processing of complaints received from the public, interpreting purpose and importance of the United Way to community affairs; all geared to foster public understanding of human service needs and gaining support of United Way fundraising. 

  5. Prepares reports for and is an ex-officio member of all committees as well as the Board of Directors regarding the total activities of United Way as well as governmental developments which affect human services; interprets need for and/or proposed legislation related to human services at the local, state, and national level to agencies and Board of Directors.  Sees that minutes are kept of all committee meetings, Board of Directors, and Annual Membership Meeting.

  6. Maintains sound financial structure providing for careful economical and safe administration of funds, and sees that accurate records of United Way finances are maintained according to the established policy, assists in the preparation of annual budget and drafts recommendations covering future United Way operations and agency allocation; prepares reviews, distributes and explains monthly and quarterly operating budgets to Board.

  7. Participates in the development and implementation of short and long-range planning for human service delivery and facilities; assists in development of plans for assessing program effectiveness.  This includes assisting in gathering data on human service problems; proposing solutions and recommending the mobilizing of financial and volunteer manpower resources to solve problems; may include the recommending of programs to prevent the emergence of problems.

  8. Pursues a continuing program of formal and informal education in human service and delivery, administrative, and management areas to maintain, strengthen, and broaden his/her concepts, philosophy, and ability as President.

  9. Performs special assignments as requested by Board of Directors.

  10. Participates in community, state, and national associations, and professional activities which define the delivery of human services.

  1. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a field relevant to the conduct of the above responsibilities is desirable.

  2. Five years experience in using and developing skills in administration, communication, fundraising, planning, and financial analysis is required.

  3. Understanding of not-for-profit organizations is necessary.  United Way experience (volunteer or staff) is desired.

  4. Achievement-oriented – driven for success and willing to take initiative.
