Job Summary:

The Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) is responsible for providing direct patient care including individual, group, and family/marital therapies which are consistent with the plan of treatment as directed by the patient’s attending psychiatrist.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Assess the discharge/aftercare needs of diagnosed patients and facilitate the linkage to required services.
  • Assess each patient’s level of functioning and ability to return to the community daily.
  • Develop and document discharge plan with physician, patient/family, and other available resources.
  • Implement and document patient/family teaching as part of plan of care.
  • Provide discharge notes to summarize the patient’s status.


  • Perform crisis intervention.
  • Provide individual psychotherapy for caseload.
  • Complete progress notes.
  • Serve as an effective role model for interpersonal communication and problem-solving, while working with patients and fellow staff members in the therapeutic milieu.
  • Identify measurable goals, share plan of care and goals with the patient, family members, and staff.
  • Follow policy related to patients in restraints.
  • Maintain awareness of comfort and safety needs of patients.
  • Observe patients and record significant conditions and reactions. Notify supervisor or physician of patient’s condition and reaction to drugs, treatment, and significant incidents.

Quality Improvement/Safety:

  • Participate in department or unit quality improvement activities.
  • Document each service provided for each patient served in accordance with HCFA and hospital standards.
  • Advocate and support unit, hospital, and nursing activities.
  • Achieve and maintain competency in skills and comply with policies associated with the skills inventory.
  • Share knowledge and expertise by participating in patient care conferences, in-service education, and serving on nursing committees. Research current trends in nursing practices and technology.
  • Maintain personal education record.

Patient Care:

  • Work cooperatively and harmoniously with co-workers, supervisory staff and physicians. Performs as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team.
  • Establish effective interpersonal relationships with patients, family members, and staff.
  • Recognize the patient’s right to make decisions concerning his/her health care and participate in his/her care.
  • Demonstrate ability and desire to provide excellent customer service to all patients and visitors.
  • Complete documentation concerning patient care related to certificate and/or petition and document on required state facility forms.
  • Any other duties as required or requested.

Required Education:

Master’s degree in Psychology or related field.

Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC)

Required Experience:

Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the mental health field.

Desirable Experience:

Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in a psychiatric unit.
