OverviewThe Welding Process Engineer serves as a technical expert in Electron Beam Welding, supporting product development, qualification, and production of semiconductor equipment hardware. This role operates in a fast-paced, high-impact environment, partnering with R&D, manufacturing, suppliers, and customers to solve complex welding and metallurgical challenges that directly affect product performance and reliability.Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for Electron Beam Welding (EBW) processes across development, qualification, and production
  • Lead weld process development, optimization, and qualification, including WPS definition, parameter development, and process window establishment
  • Support new product development from prototype builds through production release and initial field deployment
  • Design and execute experiments, metallurgical evaluations, and failure analyses to resolve weld-related issues
  • Analyze weld impacts on microstructure, heat-affected zones (HAZ), distortion, residual stress, and surface finish, including downstream effects (e.g., coating, anodization)
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with machining, surface treatment, coating, inspection, and manufacturing teams
  • Work with suppliers and external partners to qualify EBW capabilities and ensure process consistency
  • Provide technical support for installation, troubleshooting, and repair in cleanroom and semiconductor fab environments
  • Present data-driven findings and recommendations to internal stakeholders and customers
  • Maintain strong customer engagement, including up to 25% travel
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field with 12+ years of experience; or PhD with 5+ years; or equivalent experience
  • Direct, hands-on experience as an Electron Beam Welding (EBW) process engineer
  • Strong understanding of weld metallurgy, including aluminum, ferrous, and nickel-based alloys
  • Experience developing and qualifying weld procedures and inspection strategies
  • Strong analytical, experimental design, and troubleshooting capabilities
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in semiconductor, aerospace, automotive, or defense hardware environments
  • Background in manufacturing engineering, including DFM/DFA and transition to production
  • Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and 3D models
  • Experience developing manufacturing documentation and workmanship standards
  • Familiarity with industry standards (ASME, AMS, AS, SEMI, MIL)
  • Six Sigma Green or Black Belt certification
  • Experience qualifying or auditing supplier EBW facilities
Work Environment
  • Hands-on work in cleanroom labs and semiconductor fab environments
  • Up to 25% travel, including international customer and supplier visits
