About Guardians of Flushing Bay:

Guardians of Flushing Bay (GoFB) was founded in 2015 by a coalition of dragon boaters advocating for the health and access of Flushing Bay. Since incorporating as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2018, GoFB has evolved into an organization with a shared vision of a healthy and equitably accessible Flushing Waterways where our watershed communities feel part of a thriving collective that stewards the water and each other. We accomplish our goals through grassroots organizing, community science and stewardship, habitat restoration, community planning, and free, family-friendly programming. Position Description: 

Guardians of Flushing Bay (GoFB) is seeking a Watershed Advocacy Manager (the Manager) to join our growing team. The Manager will work in close coordination with the Executive Director and Community Engagement Manager to strategically grow and strengthen advocacy campaigns related to equitable water access and social-ecological health. The position will include: 

  • Campaign Strategy and Planning: Refine and execute GoFB’s multi-pronged campaign strategy with a focus on targeted public engagement, base building, coalition building, and community organizing. 
  • Community Science Data Synthesis: Collaborate with Stewardship staff to synthesize and integrate GoFB’s water quality, habitat, marine debris, and air quality community science data into GoFB’s advocacy and campaign strategy. 
  • Coalition Development and Support:Build, sustain, support, and/or manage coalitions related to the campaign strategy. Act as the spokesperson for GoFB in these coalitions and in direct advocacy with elected officials. 
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Cultivate and maintain relationships with community leaders, partner organizations, and city and state officials to ensure effective collaboration and shared impact. 
  • Program Growth: Build a strategic plan for GoFB’s advocacy program, including capacity development. There will be the potential for staff management as the program grows. 
  • Communication and Outreach: Collaborate with GoFB’s Community Stewardship Coordinator to develop compelling messaging and build relationships with local media. 
  • Performance Monitoring and Reporting: Monitor campaign performance using data analytics and make data-driven adjustments. 
  • Other: Related tasks as needed.

 

Qualifications: 

  • At least 5 years of experience in community organizing, campaign advocacy, urban policy, community engagement, or other related field; 
  • Deep experience working within social-ecological resilience, community science, environmental justice, ecological justice, environmental planning, or climate justice issue areas;
  • Ease working in a collaborative environment with a small, dedicated team; 
  • Clear written and verbal communicator;
  • Resident of Queens strongly preferred;
  • Proficiency in one of our watershed languages is a plus (e.g., Chinese, Spanish, Korean, Hindi);  
  • Familiarity with Airtable, Google Drive, Slack, and Excel is a plus. 

 

Compensation: This role is full-time at 40 hrs/week, and the salary range is $71,500 to $78,000. The final salary is based on an equitable and transparent compensation calculator that factors past experience and responsibility. Benefits include:

Location: GoFB is entirely remote, with some possible on-site community meetings, retreats and/or staff meetings. The Watershed Advocacy Manager will be both remote and in the field, collaborating with partners. All employees will receive a laptop and relevant software.
