Job Title: Registered Nurse, Oncology (Outpatient) Profession: RN Specialty: Oncology (Outpatient) Duration: 13 months Shift: Day Shift - 4 x 9s Hours per Shift: 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday to Friday (days determined by patient census) Experience: Preferred oncology nurse experience in a radiation department License: Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice required Certifications: - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an approved vendor required - Oncology Nursing Certification (ONC) or Chemotherapy Immunotherapy certification required Description: Delivers coordinated nursing care for a patient or assigned group of patients in an oncology department according to established standards of care and the nursing process. Supervises and directs the activities of various levels of assigned nursing staff. Coordinates care with other disciplines while utilizing critical thinking, professional and supervisory discretion, and independent judgment. Conducts baseline assessments and nursing histories of outpatients receiving radiation therapy, including vital signs, pain assessments, and medication histories. Utilizes Oncology Nursing Society guidelines in documentation. Assesses patients for fall risk and allergies, and communicates findings to the medical team. Conducts weekly assessments of patients for signs and symptoms of side effects from radiation therapy. Prepares charts for initial assessments and follow-up visits to the radiation therapy department. Communicates any pertinent changes to the medical team. Assists the medical team with all procedures performed in the radiation therapy department, including Stereotactic Radiosurgery and High Dose Rate Brachytherapy. Prepares the exam room for patients. Takes vital signs and assists with medical procedures. Cleans and maintains instruments used in procedures. Performs blood draws and starts intravenous therapy as needed for medication administration. Administers oxygen when necessary. Acts as a mediator and resource regarding transportation, scheduling, and relevant medical issues between patients and therapy teams. Performs other job-related duties as assigned. This department provides comprehensive coordinated care for ambulatory patients with complex diseases or disorders. A team approach is utilized, providing patients access to multiple care providers in a single visit. Services are provided in an outpatient department or center located within a reasonable distance from the primary facility.
