Job Description

Job Summary

The staff photographer at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary is an organized, team-oriented candidate with photographic skills and creativity, to help promote the seminary, its mission and academic programs, to the world. The photographer helps plan, produce and implement a wide variety of highly creative and high-quality story-telling images of people, locations and events that showcase the distinctiveness of the school for use in marketing and promotional materials for websites, social media, printed and digital publications, advertising and other collateral.

Key Responsibilities

  • Use originality, creativity, and imagination when collaborating with designers, videographers, editorial, web, social media teams to conceptualize and produce photos that support the goals and objectives of Southwestern Seminary.
  • Ability to prioritize and self-manage photo projects, assignments, and stories given by the Creative Director, or other hierarchical superiors within the communications department. Adhering to project guidelines and deadlines, working within a fast-paced, quick-turnaround environment, while working alongside other part-time and full-time visual creatives within the same department, as well as working with other internal and external clients.
  • Able to maintain the visual identity of Southwestern Seminary by creating photos that effectively communicate its desired message and supports the overall communication strategies of the seminary.
  • Make artistic decisions regarding elements such as appropriate lighting, shooting angle, framing and placement when independently producing work that tells the story of the seminary.
  • Be actively involved in the scheduling and coordinating of photo shoots and identifying people and locations for photo shoots. Perform photo editing, color correction, and archiving of created photography. Send photos when needed to be printed, to printer, and be able to pick them up and deliver.
  • Ensure the safe and proper technical use and maintain good operational conditions of departmental equipment
  • Able to help cover campus events that happen both during and outside of the standard operating hours (8am-5pm) of the seminary and college, some weekends and holidays might be required
  • Perform other related duties as assigned and specific to area of responsibility.

Specific Skills and Qualifications

  • Degree in photography, communications or a related field is preferred.
  • Successful completion of background check, MVR, and credit check may be required.
  • Must demonstrate proficient use of camera and computer equipment.
  • 2+ years of experience in photography or relevant internship is preferred.
  • Other communications related skills, such as copy writing, graphic design, video, and/or web design and social media skills area plus.
  • Basic knowledge or familiarity with industry standard photo software and tools including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, Photo Mechanic, Mac OS X. Basic skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively within team dynamic.
  • Ability to give direction to clients in staged photographic settings.
  • Ability to set up photoshoots or get campus photography at your own initiative

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Office Environment - May be required to reach above shoulder level for organizational tasks, bend, stoop, or reach to access lower or upper shelves.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time, moving about the office to interact.
  • Ability to use a computer and near-visual acuity in reading digital material.
  • Exchanges information by telephone, computer, in writing and in person.
  • Ability to traverse campus for meetings and talk to groups while doing so.
  • Moderate Lifting - Occasionally transports 20-30lbs of parts and equipment across short distances by various means (e.g., carrying by hand, cart, golf cart) to accomplish tasks.
  • Ability to withstand the heat and cold of the north Texas climate.
