The School Nurse coordinates and delivers comprehensive health services to students across the district in compliance with federal and state laws, professional nursing standards, and district policies. The School Nurse promotes the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of students to support academic success across all educational settings. This position provides direct nursing care, oversees health room operations, provides oversight to health assistants, and serves as a key member of the educational team.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Health Services

  • Provides direct nursing care for sick and injured students.
  • Delivers emergency care and responds to health crises.
  • Develops and implements Individualized Health Plans (IHPs).
  • Co-facilitates and/or leads instruction in classrooms on district-identified learning targets to support on-going learning for staff and students.
  • Participates in IEP and 504 meetings as appropriate.
  • Oversees medication administration and monitors effectiveness.
  • Supervises specialized health procedures (e.g., blood glucose monitoring, catheterization, tube feeding).
  • Trains and supports staff on emergency medications and student-specific health/action plans.
  • Follows up on medically excused absences as needed.

Health Oversight & Compliance

  • Develops, reviews, and updates health-related policies and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and district health regulations.
  • Assists with immunization compliance and medical documentation.
  • Maintains accurate, confidential student health records.
  • Assists in prevention and control of communicable diseases.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Oversees and supports building health assistants.
  • Collaborates with physicians, healthcare providers, Marathon County Health Department, and other school nurses.
  • Serves as a resource to staff regarding student health concerns.
  • Participates in crisis intervention teams and school safety planning.
  • Promotes health education and wellness initiatives district-wide.

Program & Resource Management

  • Recommends health room and AED supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Maintains organized and efficient health room operations.
  • Facilitates trainings and educational opportunities for staff and families.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

WHAT IT TAKES

  • Current, unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Wisconsin or a multistate license from another Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • In lieu of BSN, associate degree in Nursing with completion of a course in public or community health nursing (transcripts must be submitted to DPI for review and approval) required.
  • Current CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver's license and proof of current automobile insurance.
  • Recent experience in public health, pediatric, or school nursing preferred.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with students, staff, parents/guardians, healthcare providers, and community partners.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with diverse populations.
  • Ability to adapt the nursing process to meet individual student needs.
  • Knowledge of ethical and evidence-based nursing practice.
  • Ability to provide oversight and delegate to health assistants and staff.
  • Flexibility to respond to changing health needs, emergencies, and district priorities.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of medical and personal information.
  • Strong time management, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (email, word processing, spreadsheets).
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism, reliability, punctuality, and attention to detail.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Ability to lift up to 30-50 pounds (e.g., assisting students).
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Exposure to bodily fluids and communicable diseases.
  • Ability to travel between buildings.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • 199 days per year (approximately mid-August to mid-June).

  • At-Will Salary (Exempt).

  • Salary to be determined based on qualifications and experience.

  • Full-time, 8 hours per day.
