TITLE: School Nurse
TYPE: School Nurse
SALARY: Per School Nurse Collective Bargaining Agreement
REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Supervisor of Nurses
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Schedules and is present at all school health services, including all physical examinations, all immunization clinics, vision and hearing rechecks, scoliosis rechecks, pediculosis checks, hepatitis checks, etc.
Maintains up-to-date health records
Assumes responsibility for informing faculty and staff of those students with special health problems, i.e. life threatening allergies, diabetic, heart, petit mal, etc.
Interprets health status of a student to his/her parents and school personnel without breaching confidentiality.
Observes students on a regular basis to determine health needs
Authorizes the exclusion and/or readmission of students with contagious or infectious diseases
Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures
Administers medications when necessary
Secures all medications
Assists principal in establishing sanitary conditions within the school
Serves as a health consultant and resource person for the classroom teacher conducting health related classes when requested
Contacts and visits homes of children referred by principal where related counseling is required
Maintains adequate first aid supplies in each school
Attends IDEA evaluation and reevaluation meetings
Advises on modification of the educational program to meet health needs of the individual student through the IDEA and 504 process
Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness
Attends committee meetings and conferences regarding health services and health curriculum including Safety Committee
Participates in in-service training programs
Prepares and submits reports as requested by the Supervisor of Nurses, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services and the Superintendent of Schools as required
Makes formal referrals to specialists when appropriate and conducts follow-up or referrals
Works with the community health agencies when necessary
Assists in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives of the school department
Performs other duties as directed by the Supervisor of Nurses, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services and the Superintendent of Schools
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Licensed Registered Nurse
Certified as a School Nurse by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
Certified in CPR
Civil Service eligible
