RN - ICU

About Facility:
o 777 Hemlock St, Macon, GA 31201
o 637 Licensed Beds
o Level 1 Trauma Designation
o Teaching Hospital
o Chest Pain Center
o Stroke Center
Unit Information:
o Beds: each ICU unit has 10-20 beds
o Minimum Years of Experience required? 2 years ICU RN exp
o Will you accept a first-time traveler? Yes
Patient Types/Common Diagnoses:
o CCU - Critical Care Unit
Similar patient types in CCU and MICU. Medical based ICU patients DKA, sepsis, respiratory/kidney/liver failure, GI bleeds, etc.
o MICU - Medical ICU
See above
o STICU - Surgical Trauma ICU
Will see surgical and trauma patients in this unit. Travelers could care for MVA, GSW, stabbings, falls, etc.
o NICU - Neuro ICU
High level neuro surgeries like cranies, EVDs, shunt, bolts, spinal surgeries, ICP monitoring, etc. If they have experience with EVDs and ICP monitoring, they will be given those here
o CVICU - Cardiovascular ICU
Traveler will not be given fresh open hearts, AAA repairs, or devices like IABPs, Impellas, ECMO, LVADs, etc. Traveler could potentially have a patient with a Swanz, but not required. Will see other vascular surgeries like fem-pops. Will also see MIs, STEMIs, post-cath, etc.
o PCU - Progressive Care Unit- Step down unit
General medical PCU
Patient Ratios:
o RN:
ICU 1:1-2 (occasionally 1:3 depending on acuity)
PCU 1:3-4
o LPN: 1:4-6
o CNA: most units have 1-2 CNA per shift
Required License, National Certification, Certs (BLS, ACLS, etc.), or other position specific requirements such as Driver's License and/or Insurance:
o BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
o CCRN (preferred)
o traveler will be required to pass an EKG competency exam during onboarding
Skills required:
o General nursing skills: Trach chare, chest tube management, PIV starts, glucometer, etc.
o Travelers are not expected to care for devices like ECMO, IABP, Impellas, LVADs, fresh open hearts/AAA repairs, TABLO, etc.
o Common drips: Insulin drips, Heparin drips, narcotic drips, paralytic drips, actively titrate vasopressors, sedation drips, cardiac drips, etc.
o 6 months EPIC experience required
Support within the Department:
o CNA will assist with Vitals, blood glucose checks, baths, bed changes, feeding if need, patient safety attendant; walk pts, turn pts
o Unit Secretary: on unit 7a-11p; then house wide call secretary 11p-7a
o Charge nurse: Yes could take patient assignment on Nights/Weekends
o Phlebotomy? Most units are lab collect phlebotomy; RNs draw off of CVLs
o IV/VAT Team? Not an IV team - do have a PICC team
o Resource Nurse? Yes, we have discharge nurses, Resource team floats to all units
o RT 24/7
o Hospitalist 24/7
o Intensivist 24/7
o Telemetry monitoring/tech? ICU responsible for monitoring patients
Technology/Equipment:
o EMR: EPIC 6 months EPIC experience required
o IV Pump: Alaris
o Med dispensing: Pyxis
o Monitors: Phillips
o Unit specific equipment: Nova Glucose Stat Strips
Floating: If yes, where?
o Travelers are utilized in a float pool capacity will be required to float to all ICU and PCU units in house. There is no guarantee for how many shifts working ICU vs. PCU. MUST be comfortable floating where needed.
o Will float to ER to care for holds
Orientation (facility and unit):
o 1 day orientation with work on educational modules
o 2 days departmental

o Scrub Color: RN- Navy; LPN- Ceil Blue
o Parking: Free? Have free parking around campus or can pay to park in parking decks
o Unit Culture: Busy; Team Oriented
