Make a difference in health care! Operated by the Management & Training Corporation, Otero County Processing Medical Facility in Chaparral, New Mexico, provides a unique opportunity to care for an underserved population.

What you'll do: You'll be responsible for providing nursing care and assistance for ill and/or injured persons. All decisions should be reviewed with the nursing director with the exception of routine duties assigned to the nurse (LPN) in compliance with MTC Medical and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) directives.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and implement effective systems for identification, prevention and control of communicable diseases.
  • Monitor incidence of infectious and communicable diseases among offenders, including venereal disease, HIV, AIDS, TB and hepatitis.
  • Monitor compliance with OSHA regulations and requirements pertaining to health care including blood borne pathogen protection.
  • Promote safe and healthy environment of the medical staff.
  • Direct and conduct monthly safety and sanitation inspections of the facility, including food preparation and dining areas, laundry, housing, bathrooms and health services.
  • Ensure that referrals are provided for community follow-up and coordination of care after inmates with infectious diseases are released from the facility.
  • Confer with the DON and/or the health services administrator (HSA) to develop and conduct chronic care and infection control education and training programs for inmates and staff, including symptoms, transmission, disease maintenance and/or prevention.
  • Assist with quality improvement projects as assigned.
  • Assist to train staff/co-worker's skills related to infection control, infectious disease, and chronic care management.
  • Refer chronic care clinic inmates to physician/physician assistant/nurse practitioner as directed in the Chronic Care Clinic Health Standards.
  • Ensure appropriate lab testing is completed in all chronic care clinic inmates.
  • Schedule all chronic clinic appointments as determined by Chronic Care Clinic Heath Standards.
  • Practice basic cost containment and utilization management techniques.
  • Keep work area neat and organized.
  • Participate in in-service orientation and continuing education classes.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings, including the Continuous Quality Improvement Committee meetings, promote communication and proper flow of relevant information.
  • Comply with the requirements of applicable regulations, laws, rules, procedures, policies, standards and contractual requirements.
  • Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed; provide regular feedback to staff regarding social skills procedures and intervention techniques.
  • Maintain accountability of staff, non-citizens, and property; adhere to safety practices.
  • Regular attendance is required.

It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her scope of work as determined by management.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six (6) months related experience.
  • Graduate of an accredited Licensed Practical Nursing program, current, valid practical nursing license for the state of New Mexico or compact state.
  • Must possess current CPR certification. Valid driver's license in the state of New Mexico or Texas with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
