GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Join the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) as a Drilling Supervisor in Cheyenne, Wyoming!

Are you ready for a rewarding and dynamic challenge? WYDOT is seeking a skilled Drilling Supervisor to lead the geotechnical drilling operations within our Geology Program. In this role, you'll oversee all aspects of drilling operations, ensuring safety, quality, and efficiency across Wyoming's transportation system.

As a Drilling Supervisor, you'll be responsible for managing the safe operation of an impressive range of heavy equipment, including three different sizes of drill rigs-CME55, CME75, and CME1050-along with two 2,000-gallon water trucks, a backhoe, various transport trucks, trailers, and light-duty supply vehicles. You'll also provide training and guidance to the team, ensuring that all operations are carried out safely and effectively.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • Trains and manages drilling personnel in the safe operation of various drilling methods (auger/wireline/air-mud rotary), coring, testing and sampling equipment assigned to the Geology Program
  • Trains drillers in the safe operations of transportation of rigs, water trucks, and backhoe to project sites
  • Routinely develops efficient means and methods to advance drill holes, collects samples at the required testing frequency/intervals; installs monitoring well casing
  • Schedules and prioritizes regular and required maintenance of all service equipment; support trucks, drill rigs/backhoe; water trucks; transports and trailers
  • Works in all types of weather, heavy lifting, work on Interstate highway, narrow roads under live traffic, and varying terrain with remote/difficult access
  • Ensures effective communication between drill crews, geologists, geological supervisors to coordinate equipment status and supply adequate staffing of drill rigs from project to project
  • Orders replacement parts and new equipment for drill rigs to replace worn out parts
  • Tracks billing and documentation of all supply purchases
  • Safely operates all equipment during manpower shortage, around the presence of underground and overhead utilities, and noisy environment
  • Participates in interviewing candidates for new hires to operate rigs and document hours required to obtain CDL
  • Contributes to daily tailgate safety talks with crew
  • Provides input to the Program on incidents and avoiding incidents and take required action to improve safe operations of equipment and personnel working around them
  • Develops specifications for new drill rigs, trucks, trailers, and support vehicles
  • Conducts yearly inventory of supplies and keeps safety equipment stocked

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference given to Commercial Drivers License holders

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of geological testing and testing equipment
  • Knowledge of reading gauges and interpreting electronic readings for monitoring while drilling
  • Skilled in the use of spreadsheets and databases
  • Knowledge of maintenance procedures for heavy equipment repairs
  • Knowledge of safety procedures for drilling/basic geologic knowledge
  • Ability to lift 100 pounds
  • Ability to obtain and retain a Commercial Drivers License

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelors Degree (typically in Construction Management)

Experience:

0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Drilling) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Driller

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

High School Diploma plus 3-5 years of progressive work experience (typically in Drilling) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Driller

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Working during inclement weather and uneven terrain
  • Hazardous conditions including wet and muddy ground, deep snow and working near live traffic and running rivers, ice and wildlife
