Position Information

Are you an experienced Fire Rescue professional looking to make a difference in a thriving community? Look no further! New Hanover County is seeking an experienced Deputy Fire Marshal. The Deputy Fire Marshal performs responsible work inspecting buildings and fire equipment to ensure fire code compliance, completes plan reviews, investigates causes of fires during scheduled hours, is assigned on-call rotation hours, and is responsible for conducting reviews of new subdivisions, serving on the Technical Review Committee to ensure compliance and performing Fire and Life Safety education.

Essential Duties:

  • Performs scheduled and on-call work completing state-mandated inspections of existing commercial and institutional buildings including: performing tests of suppression and alarm systems; completing reports of inspections; re-inspecting for compliance; collecting fees; and issuing citations and permits.
  • Performs training for Fire and Life Safety Education.
  • Investigates fire scenes to determine the origin and cause of the fire including taking photographs and making maps of the scene; interviewing witnesses; collecting physical evidence; and preparing written reports of findings.
  • Researches state laws and local ordinances related to construction and fire prevention and represents the County in court.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries from the public and provides public fire education.
  • Responds to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material spills, and bomb threats and renders appropriate assistance.
  • Conducts fire inspection, fire investigations, fire prevention programs, and performs community services.
  • Reviews and approves fire protection plans for commercial and institutional buildings including reviewing plans and technical data as assigned.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
  • Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.

Hours:

Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Must be available to provide on-call services as part of a staff rotation. Must be available to work during emergency situations (Description of work hours above does not apply in emergency situations).

Salary Information:

The hiring range for this position is $59,168 - $79,877. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent, and two (2) years of building construction or related fire experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the specific position as listed above.

Licenses/Certifications

Required at time of application:

  • NC Drivers License class B within 30 days

Required Within 90 days of employment:

  • IFSAC or ProBoard accredited certification as Emergency Vehicle Driver
  • NC Standard Level III Fire Prevention Certificate
  • NC Certified Fire Investigator certifications

Must be obtained no later than one (1) year of employment

  • NC Fire Inspector Standard Level I Certification.
  • NC Emergency Medical Responder or greater equivalent such as Emergency Medical Technician Certification.
  • Certification as North Carolina Fire Investigator Technician or completion of NFA R0772 class (if not certified as an NC Certified Fire Investigator).

Must be obtained no later than two (2) years of employment

  • NC Fire Inspector Standard Level II Certification.
  • NC Fire/Life Safety Educator I certifications.

Must be obtained no later than five (5) years of employment

  • NC Fire Inspector Standard Level III Certification.
  • NC Certified Fire Investigator (CFI).
