Unit Overview

Our Postpartum Unit is a vibrant and collaborative center dedicated to providing comprehensive care for:

Postpartum mothers following vaginal and cesarean deliveries Newborns receiving routine couplet care Antepartum patients requiring inpatient monitoring Gynecologic patients recovering from surgical procedures

Nurses partner closely with skilled Perinatal Technicians to deliver safe, individualized care throughout each patient's stay. The unit works in close collaboration with Labor & Delivery and the NICU/Nursery to ensure seamless transitions from delivery through postpartum recovery. Interdisciplinary teamwork with OB/GYNs, neonatologists, and other specialists is central to our practice, with 24/7 physician coverage available to support complex clinical needs.

Key Responsibilities

As a Postpartum Clinical Support Tech, you will:

Provide compassionate, patient-centered support to postpartum mothers and newborns under the direction of licensed nursing staff Obtain and document maternal and neonatal vital signs and report changes in patient condition to the nursing team Assist with patient care following vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections, gynecologic surgeries, and antepartum admissions Support families with basic newborn care, maternal comfort measures, safe sleep practices, and unit routines Assist nurses and providers with procedures, patient transport, and care coordination as needed Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including nurses, OB/GYNs, neonatologists, lactation consultants, and support staff Facilitate smooth transitions from Labor & Delivery to postpartum care and assist with coordination with Nursery/NICU teams Accurately document assigned patient care activities in the electronic health record (EHR)

Summary

Responsible for assisting the professional caregiver in the delivery of patient care, transporting patient and/or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms and performing a wide range of clerical, transcription, and maintenance of the patient care unit desk area functions.

Responsibilities

  1. Assists physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, as well as procurement of equipment and supplies.
  2. Critically reviews patient care documentation making note of any significant changes in the patients condition and make an immediate report to a registered nurse or physician.
  3. Provides a variety of clerical tasks to include but not limited to organizing and prioritizing workload, greeting and directing visitors, researching information as requested by nurses and physicians, reviewing orders for logic and clarity, revising orders as requested by the nurse, answering the telephone/patient call lights, transcribing physician orders, and maintaining medical records.
  4. Performs routine quality assurance audits, safety checks, and inventory of supplies.
  5. Provides administrative and clerical support including PI audits and data entry.
  6. Provides clinical support assistance to include, but not limited to, cleaning the work area, maintaining office equipment, troubleshooting common software and hardware problems, changing linens, checking supply inventory, re-stocking supplies, transporting patients/supplies/specimens, and assisting in the orientation of new employees and students.
  7. Provides direct personal care to patients as outlined in plan of care activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, assisting with ambulation.
  8. Measures and records vital signs, and patient height and weight.
  9. May be responsible for specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, and/or postural drainage.
  10. Reinforces routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and document patient understanding of instructions.
  11. Distributes patient education materials at the request of patients and/or health care providers.

Other Information

Education Requirements: High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED)

Licensure/Certification Requirements: Listed as a Nursing Assistant I by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Service Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Professional Experience Requirements: Prior experience not required

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements: Must be fluent in verbal and written English language Capability to develop computer skills if not competent
