Job Overview The Child Life Specialist (CLS) works in health care and community settings to address the psychosocial, emotional, and family concerns that accompany the illness and injury of infants, children, adolescents, and youth. The CLS utilizes developmentally appropriate information, procedure support, emotional processing, play, self-expression and empowerment to improve the coping and adjustment of patients and families. As a member of the psychosocial team, the CLS collaborates with the multidisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure that emotionally safe, family-centered care is being provided to patients and families. In addition, the CLS takes an active role in developing and maintaining resources, planning, and facilitating special events and providing educational opportunities throughout Children's Hospital Colorado (CHCO) and the community. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Children's Hospital Colorado on the Anschutz Medical Campus is the largest in the Rocky Mountain region. With up to 48 beds and a care team of more than 150 clinicians, nurses and specialized staff, we see some of the most acute pediatric conditions from the surrounding states. Our PICU provides critical care for any child who needs it. We see diagnoses that include, but are not limited to: Severe infections, such as sepsis and pneumonia Single or multi-organ system failure Traumatic injuries Respiratory failure and severe asthma attacks Recovery from complex orthopedic, neurologic and general surgeries, as well as organ transplants The PICU also supports patients who need advanced life-support therapies like extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) and inhaled nitric oxide (iNO). As a child life specialist in the PICU, you will play a crucial role in reducing the stress and trauma associated with critical illness and hospitalization. You will provide developmentally appropriate interventions, including procedural preparation and support, therapeutic play, and coping strategies for patients and their families. You will also create me ningful legacy-building opportunities, offer sibling support, and collaborate with our Integrative and Creative Care Team to bring comfort and moments of joy to children facing serious medical challenges. Experience: Successful completion of 600 hours of child life internship under the direct supervision of a certified child life specialist. Certification(s): Current Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS).
