Description

Anaheim Fire & Rescue seeks Ambulance Operators - EMT to provide emergency ambulance transport services and basic first aid assistance during medical response calls and standby events. Ambulance Operators will safely drive an ambulance and other vehicles during emergency and non-emergency situations while providing assistance to Paramedics and other Anaheim Fire and Rescue staff as needed. The city seeks career-minded individuals with long-term interest in becoming Firefighters or Firefighter Paramedics with the Anaheim Fire & Rescue Department.

Please note, all Ambulance Operators are hired as part-time. Full-time opportunities may be available immediately following the Anaheim AO Academy and/or throughout the 3-year term.

EMT license must be issued by the State of California. National Registry will not be accepted in lieu of state registration.

Desired but not required:

  • Completion of college-level courses in Fire Technology
  • Graduation from a California Fire Academy

Ambulance Operator Academy

The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill three (3) AO Academies. Attending a 7-day AO academy is mandatory for all new hires.

Candidates on the eligibility list who are not selected for the first scheduled academy will have an opportunity to be offered for the second or third academy date.

Work Schedule & Availability

Full-Time Ambulance Operators

  • Assigned to a Fire Station rotating 24-hour shifts, averaging 56 hours per week
  • Standard shift: 24 hours
  • Overtime is regularly required

Part-Time Ambulance Operators

  • Assigned to a Fire Station working on-call schedule (minimum four (4) shifts per month)
  • Shifts may be 24 hours or less and are typically scheduled two weeks in advance
  • Expected to transition into full-time positions as vacancies occur

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Operate city-owned ambulances and other department vehicles as directed, drive to and from medical emergencies as part of the ambulance transportation team.

Drive ambulance or other department vehicle during non-emergency situations.

Perform appropriate basic EMT-1 field procedures including attaining and documenting vital signs, bandaging, splinting, lifting patients into ambulance and assisting paramedics as directed.

Maintain and inventory basic emergency ambulance supplies, equipment and routine vehicle parts.

Operate within Federal, State, and local laws, regulations and guidelines including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

Attend and successfully complete department and hospital training sessions and drills.

Participate in station and equipment clean-up and assist in maintaining city vehicles and fire department facilities.

May participate in training programs to develop an awareness of the duties, activities, and responsibilities of individuals involved in fire suppression and the emergency medical tools and equipment they handle.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Part Time Ambulance Operator

The City of Anaheim offers medical and vision coverage to eligible part-time employees and their dependents. Eligibility for part-time employees is determined in accordance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN (457): The City of Anaheim enrolls part-time employees in a Deferred Compensation Plan (457). Employees contribute 7.5% of their earnings (before taxes).
