Job Purpose:

The Department of Teacher Education at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, invites applications for its Adjunct Faculty Pool focused on Washington State teacher certification coursework. We welcome applications from individuals with 5–7 years of K–12 teaching experience who demonstrate specialized expertise in K–12 educational practice. We seek candidates who can support our students in meeting Washington State teacher certification standards and contribute to our shared work preparing future educators.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to mentoring and supporting preservice teachers in developing the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to effectively serve K–12 students in diverse and complex classroom environments. Our program focuses on preparing preservice teachers who can cultivate inclusive classroom environments where identities, cultures, and languages are valued as assets for learning.

Adjunct faculty are responsible for course planning, teaching class sessions, creating and evaluating assignments, submitting grades, and being available to meet with students virtually or in person as needed. Possible teaching assignments based on need could include: Differentiated Instruction and Assessment; Disciplinary Instructional Methods (Elementary & Secondary: Arts, ELA, Mathematics, Classroom Management, Assessment, Physical Education/Health, Science, Social Studies, World Languages); Assessment; Critical Pedagogical Issues in American Education; Foundations of American Education)

Essential Functions:

  • Prepare, plan and teach assigned courses
  • Create and evaluate assignments, including submitting grades according to established deadlines
  • Use Canvas to organize the course, communicate with students, collect assignments, and post grades
  • Collaborate with department chair and/or program director on curriculum and key assessments


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's or doctoral degree in educational field, or a related disciplinary field.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior teaching experience at the university level.
  • Demonstrated ability/potential to provide quality educational experiences to a diverse student population.
  • Supervisory or administrative role in K-12 educational system
  • K-12 teacher certification (Elementary, Secondary, WA Endorsement areas)

In-Office Presence - Ability to work on-site in typical office setting and participate in in-person meetings with colleagues: 5 days/week

Standing/Sitting - Ability to remain in a stationary position for a prolonged period: Daily (>75% of time)

Lifting/Carrying - Ability to move or transport objects up to a specified weight: Often (50%-75% of time)
