The Farm Credit System provides credit and related financial services to all types of agribusinesses and agricultural enterprises. We serve farmers, ranchers, aquatic producers and rural homeowners as well as farm-related businesses, agricultural cooperatives and rural utilities. We also finance foreign and domestic entities involved with international agricultural credit transactions.
In the early 1900s, agricultural real estate loans came from commercial banks, if they were available at all, and had prohibitively high rates and short terms. Until 1913, for instance, federal law prohibited national banks from making loans with maturities beyond five years. There was a lack of any adequate agricultural credit whereby a farmer could readily secure loans on fair terms.
The Farm Credit System took root in 1916 with the passage of the Farm Credit Act. Throughout the years, Farm Credit has evolved into a network of various cooperatively owned financial entities serving rural America.
Farm Credit continues to grow in strength and consolidate locations to improve efficiencies, without losing focus on our customers. Relationships are important to us; we work to develop relationships with our borrowers and within our organizations, the System, and the community. Currently the farm credit system serves farmers, ranchers, and agribusinesses in all 50 states with a total loan volume of $208 Billion.
