Laboratory Technologist

Use specialized technology to collect biological samples, perform laboratory tests, and analyze results to detect absence or presence of specific biological and biochemical matter. Usually involves generation of scientific reports, coordination with other healthcare professionals, and equipment maintenance.

Must have a working knowledge of standard safety procedures and policies of handling equipment and materials. Must have a working knowledge of wet chemistry, chromatography techniques, analytical balance, and microbalance use as well as general laboratory instrumentation. Bachelor’s degree in science is required. A major in chemistry and extensive lab experience is preferred. Analysis of specimens to check for the existence of specified chemicals. Follow all lab-quality assurance procedures and record any deviation from them. Keep a check on inventory levels of equipment and report any faulty equipment immediately.

Assist faculty or other instructional staff in postsecondary institutions by performing instructional support activities, such as developing teaching materials, leading discussion groups, preparing and giving examinations, and grading examinations or papers.

Conduct qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses or experiments in laboratories for quality or process control or to develop new products or knowledge.

Assist social scientists in laboratory, survey, and other social science research. May help prepare findings for publication and assist in laboratory analysis, quality control, or data management.

Develop and execute software tests to identify software problems and their causes. Test system modifications to prepare for implementation. Document software and application defects using a bug tracking system and report defects to software or web developers. Create and maintain databases of known defects. May participate in software design reviews to provide input on functional requirements, operational characteristics, product designs, and schedules.

Interact with customers to provide basic or scripted information in response to routine inquiries about products and services. May handle and resolve general complaints. Excludes individuals whose duties are primarily installation, sales, repair, and technical support.

Oversee laboratory operations and ensure equipment is maintained. Schedule staff. Order supplies. Maintain established safety protocols. Train laboratory assistants. Manage disposal of samples. Handle security documents. Maintain specialized software.

Assist with standard laboratory functions that include processing or preparing laboratory specimens, materials, and supplies. Monitor and operate specialized mechanical laboratory equipment. Execute sampling, testing, measuring, and recording activities for various laboratory test. Clean and maintenance equipment and supply replenishment. Adhere to all safety and health guidelines, policies, and procedures.

Perform routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. May work under the supervision of a medical technologist.
