Workers over the age of 55 make up a large percentage of the workforce for these 10 occupations.

The Baby Boomer generation may be reaching retirement age, but that doesn’t mean they’re quite ready to exit the workforce just yet. In fact, according to a recent CareerBuilder survey, 53 percent of workers over the age of 60 say they’re postponing their retirement.

Whether staying in their current position or career path, pursuing a passion or just taking a less demanding job to stay active and earn some extra income, many older workers are choosing to continue working. As of 2018, 23 percent of the workforce is at least 55 years old.

As with any trend, the presence of older workers is more pronounced in some occupations than in others. Some of the occupations with the highest percentage of jobs held by workers age 55+ include:

Crossing guards* guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at such places as streets, schools, railroad crossings, or construction sites.

Clergy conduct religious worship and perform other spiritual functions associated with beliefs and practices of religious faith or denomination. They may also provide spiritual and moral guidance and assistance to members.

School bus drivers transport students to and from school and other activities. On school days, drivers pick up students in the morning and return them home in the afternoon. They also drive students to field trips, sporting events, and other activities.

Intercity bus drivers transport passengers between cities or towns, sometimes crossing state lines. Local transit bus drivers follow a daily schedule while transporting people on regular routes along city or suburban streets. They stop frequently, often every few blocks and when a passenger requests a stop.

Music directors and composers lead orchestras and other musical groups during performances and recording sessions. Composers write and arrange original music in a variety of musical styles.

Construction and building inspectors ensure that construction meets local and national building codes and ordinances, zoning regulations, and contract specifications.

Clinical, counseling, and school psychologists study cognitive, emotional, and social processes and behavior by observing, interpreting, and recording how people relate to one another and to their environments. They use their findings to help improve processes and behaviors.

Taxi drivers and chauffeurs drive people to and from the places they need to go. They must be familiar with city streets and locations to take passengers to their destinations. Chauffeurs take passengers on prearranged trips, sometimes in limousines, vans or private cars.
