You may have heard that due to a tough job market, many jobs once reserved for enterprising high schoolers are being filled by college students and even graduates. However, that doesn't mean there aren't any opportunities for teenagers. According to EMSI data, here are ten growing jobs with a significant teen presence.

1. Lifeguards, ski patrol and other recreational protective service workers monitor recreational areas — such as pools, beaches or ski slopes — to provide assistance and protection to participants.

Avg. Hourly Earnings: $15.00

Percentage of jobs held by 14-18 year olds: 44 percent

2. Hosts and hostesses (restaurant, lounge and coffee shop) greet customers and manage reservation and waiting lists. They may assign guests to tables suitable for the size of their group, escort patrons to their seats and provide menus. They also take reservations over the phone, arrange parties and help with other customer requests.

Avg. hourly earnings: $13.00

Percentage of jobs held by 14-18 year olds: 30 percent

3. Counter attendants (cafeteria, food concession and coffee shop) take orders and serve food over a counter in snack bars, cafeterias, movie theaters and coffee shops. They fill cups with coffee, soda and other beverages, and may prepare fountain specialties, such as milkshakes and ice cream sundaes.

Avg. hourly earnings: $9.53

4. Umpires, referees and other sports officials preside over competitive athletic or sporting events to help maintain standards of play. They detect infractions and decide penalties according to the rules of the game.

5. Amusement and recreation attendants schedule the use of recreation facilities, maintain and provide equipment to participants in sporting events or recreational pursuits, or operate amusement concessions and rides.

6. Dining room and cafeteria attendants and bartender helpers(sometimes collectively referred to as bus staff) help waiters, waitresses and bartenders by cleaning and setting tables, removing dirty dishes and keeping serving areas stocked with supplies.

7. Locker room, coatroom and dressing room attendants provide personal items to patrons or customers in locker rooms, dressing rooms or coatrooms.

8. Ushers, lobby attendants and ticket takers assist patrons at entertainment events by collecting admission tickets and passes from patrons, assisting in finding seats, searching for lost articles and locating restrooms and telephones.

9. Recreation workers design and lead leisure activities for groups in volunteer agencies or recreation facilities, such as playgrounds, parks, camps, aquatic centers and senior centers. They may lead activities such as arts and crafts, sports, adventure programs, music and camping.

Avg. hourly earnings: $19.00

10. Library technicians assist patrons, organize library materials and information, and perform clerical and administrative tasks.

Avg. hourly earnings: $38.00
