Akron Beacon Journal

Overview
The Beacon Journal; rich in history and journalistic excellence

The Akron Beacon Journal — the daily newspaper that produces Beacon Journal Digital — revels in its proud tradition of journalistic excellence. The newspaper has won four Pulitzer prizes, and was recently named Ohio’s best daily newspaper. The Beacon Journal, has nearly 600 employees and serves readers in Summit, Stark, Medina, Portage and Wayne counties, all located in Northeast Ohio. The paper is very active in supporting local community, serving our advertisers, aiding local institutions, and of course, informing our readers.

The Beacon Journal’s roots go back to its start in Akron in 1839 as a weekly publication called the Summit Beacon.

In 1897, the Summit Beacon merged with the Akron Journal to form the daily Akron Beacon Journal. In 1903, the newspaper was purchased by Charles Landon Knight, beginning the Akron Beacon Journal's long association with the Knight family.

Knight's son, John S. Knight, launched the Knight newspaper group in 1937, when he bought the Miami Herald. Although Knight went on to buy dozens of other newspapers, the Akron Beacon Journal was considered his flagship paper. Knight newspapers merged with Ridder publications in 1974 to form Knight Ridder Inc., which is still the Akron Beacon Journal's parent company.

The Akron Beacon Journal moved to its home on High and Exchange streets in 1938. The building, with a clock tower that can be seen all over downtown Akron, has been expanded several times since then.

In 1974, Knight Newspapers merged with Ridder Publications to form Knight Ridder Publishing. That company currently owns 32 daily newspapers, and is considered the nation’s second-largest newspaper and information technology company. Among the newspapers that are part of Knight Ridder include the Philadelphia Inquirer, the San Jose Mercury News, the Miami Herald, the Charlotte Observer, the Lexington Herald-Leader and the St. Paul Pioneer Press-Dispatch
