Metallurgist/Metallurgical Engineer ~ Houston, TX


Our Clients’ Rig Solutions business unit is currently seeking a Metallurgist/Metallurgical Engineer with a strong background in Metallurgy to join our team. Company is a worldwide leader in providing major mechanical components for land and offshore drilling rigs, complete land drilling and well servicing rigs, tubular inspection and internal tubular coatings, drill string equipment, extensive lifting and handling equipment, and a broad offering of down-hole drilling motors, bits and tools.  Responsibilities:

  • The successful Metallurgist candidate will lead our diverse global organization to establish policies and procedures that standardize and align our operations; conduct analysis to identify and implement continual improvement activities; and represent Company with our customers, suppliers, and certifying agencies. In this role, the candidate will be responsible for:
  • Organizing, performing, and/or witnessing failure analysis
  • Conducting metallurgical investigations relating to process control and product development
  • Providing material recommendations for research and new product development and to meet customer and/or industry requirements
  • Assisting with selection of materials/coatings for performance in various drilling environments
  • Developing and maintaining internal specifications for raw materials, heat treatment, surface treatments, and others to assure compliance with applicable industry standards and best practices
  • Establishing and approving specifications and techniques in the areas of materials, welding, heat treating, processing, coating, and non-destructive testing
  • Providing technical expertise for issues associated with the engineering, procurement, and use of castings, forgings, and weldments
  • Directing material/product analysis including preparation of samples and analysis of results
  • Disposition of material on non-conformance issues
  • Writing accurate and persuasive technical reports detailing causes and corrective actions associated with analysis of data and issues
  • Providing technical support and training to a broad range of people including leadership, internal engineering, manufacturing, project management, sales, and field operations; as well as customers, suppliers, and third party agencies. 

Job Requirements

The candidate will also assist in:

  • The design, installation, and evaluation of Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) processes
  • Sampling systems, procedures, and statistical techniques; design or specify inspection and testing mechanisms and equipment
  • Analyze production and service limitations and standards and recommend revision of specifications when required
  • Formulates or helps formulate QA/QC policies and procedures
  • Conducts training on QA/QC concepts and tools
  • Interfaces with all other functions within the business unit, customers, suppliers, and third party agencies on quality related issues.
  • The candidate must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to communicate the results of his/her research to others effectively. Qualified candidates are innovative, persistent and are methodically attentive to details.


Other requirements of this position include:

  • Minimum of four (4) years working experience as a Metallurgist/Materials Engineer
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Texas, or capable of being licensed as professional engineer in Texas.
  • Strong background in report development and presentation of findings
  • Excellent English communication skills in discussion of metallurgy and related support
  • Must be able to work well with others in all different types of environments
  • The candidate must be able to travel approximately 25% of the time
  • Bachelor of Science or Master of Science Degree in field of Metallurgy, Materials Science, and/or Metallurgical Engineering


Preferred Skills:

  • In addition to the noted job requirements, the ideal candidate will also have a strong technical and working background in non-destructive examination (NDE) and welding.
  • Current ASNT Certified NDT Level III in PT, UT, MT, and RT or qualified to take ASNT NDT Level III in PT, UT, MT, and RT
  • Ability to achieve NDT Level III renewal requirements for continued certification
  • Level I or II certification or experience in Eddy Current (ET) testing
  • Certified Welding Engineer
  • AWS Certified Weld Inspector (CWI)
  • Experience with Oilfield Drilling Equipment
  • Perm position
