Job Description


QA Technician

The Quality Assurance Technician (QA tech) will fill an essential role in the monitoring and advancement of our safety and quality programs. Through daily process checks, product testing, as well as short and long term projects, the QA tech will help ensure food safety and customer satisfaction of all products produced within the company.  The successful QA tech will have a scientific base of knowledge and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels within our company.
   
Essential Functions
  • Perform pre-operational and process checks throughout production and warehousing functions of the company, sanitation verification, label checks, pathogen testing, water activity testing, pH testing and other functions essential to QA operations
  • Monitor HACCP critical control points
  • Provide independent oversight of processes, verifying compliance to federal, state and company standards and policies, and effectively communicating when there are deviations from standards or processes 
  • Calibrate and maintain equipment
  • Schedule and take samples to submit to external laboratories for results (environmental swabs, nutritional analysis, etc.)
  • Assist in training employees on food safety, company processes and FDA Good Manufacturing Practices 
  • Maintain accurate and organized records
  • Maintain inventory of supplies
  • Recommend, champion and execute program enhancements 
    
Other Functions
  • Regular attendance in conformance with Company standards is essential to the successful performance of this position
  • Associates with irregular attendance will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment
  • Due to the cyclical nature of our industry, associates will be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the Company
  • In addition, attendance at all scheduled training sessions and meetings is required
  
Upon employment, all associates are required to fully comply with HPC Foods, Ltd rules and regulations for the safe and effective operation of our facilities.  Associates who violate Company rules and regulations will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
  
Supportive Functions
In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function to be solely determined by the manager based upon the particular requirements of the Company, additional duties as necessary and assigned.
  

Job Requirements


QA Technician

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Must be able to work flexible hours
  • Basic math and literacy 
  • Must be able to speak, read, write and understand the English language
  • Basic computer operation skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel and email functions
  • Ability to understand and operate basic product testing equipment 
  • High level of organizational skills, including written and verbal communication, creative problem solving, and commitment to company goals 
  • Knowledge of food safety principles 
  • Research skills 
  • Ability to speak to groups and conduct group training 
  • Works toward continuous improvements to food safety systems 
  • Ability to solve problems and make rational decisions
  • Supports the Company’s philosophy of innovation and change management by contributing to process improvements
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously with attention to details
  • Must be well-organized and able to work with minimum supervision
  
Physical Demands
  • Work tasks are performed at various locations
  • Temperature will vary depending on location
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs
  • While performing the responsibilities of the QA tech job, the associate is required to talk and hear
  • The employee is often required to walk, stand, sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel and to manipulate equipment and keyboard
  • The employee is required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel or crouch
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision
  
Education
  • Coursework in food science, biological science or related subject or job experience to commensurate with education
  • 4 year degree in food science, biological science or related subject preferred

Experience
  • Lab experience in food processing facility preferred
  • Knowledge of FDA GMPs
  • Basic understanding of HACCP principles
  • Familiarity with modern food manufacturing processes and food safety systems

Licenses or Certificates
  • Driver’s License

Grooming
  • All associates must maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance
