MECHANICAL ENGINEER (Critical Facilities)


As a Data Center Mechanical Engineer you will be a part of highly creative, efficient team tasked with tackling the most fascinating and challenging problems in designing, building, and operating Internap owned data facilities. Our data centers are industry leading examples of energy efficient, cost effective designs. The Data Center Mechanical Engineer is ultimately responsible for the design direction and oversight of Internap’s mechanical designs as well as the review/approval of our mechanical installations. The Mechanical Engineer will also be utilized as a subject matter expert in the Mechanical field and be responsible as a team member for delivering the most highly efficient and sophisticated Mechanical systems in the world.

  • Improving Data Center Efficiencies
    • Analyze complex Data Center Mechanical, Electrical and Controls systems to identify opportunities to save energy.  Put together business reports that outline opportunities for savings and return on investment (ROI) estimates
    • Help establish and deploy a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) monitoring platform across all Data Centers.  Work to tailor weekly reports for various executive teams
    • Help establish airflow management baselines within the Data Centers and work with Operations to identify low cost ways to improve air management.  Build theoretical business cases for each site.
  • Facility Assessments
    • Work with Operations to create updated and accurate site equipment inventories
    • Compile documentation that includes equipment cuts, performance cuts, T&B reports and single line diagrams at each site
    • Create standard operating procedures for air flow assessments that can be used for all sites at fixed intervals
    • Developing infrastructure to streamline air flow assessments
  • Organizing Data Center Specific Information
    • Create updated worksheets to better track available and used cooling capacity at each site, based on current operating set-points and electric loads
    • Provide CAD drawing assistance to update existing floor plans of Internap portfolio of sites.
    • Investigate the role of DCIM software and how it will help the synergy between various teams within the company
    • Manage the implementation, functionality, integration and reporting
  • CFD Modeling
    • Simulate various scenarios on completed CFD models to anticipate challenges and formulate solutions
    • Use CFD models to explore/validate energy improvement initiates
  • Business Unit Support
    • Assist data center business unit in providing recommendations for cabinet location within data centers
    • Best practices recommendations for customer cabinet configurations
    • Assist business units on high density cooling recommendations for customers
  • CAD Proficiency
    • Provide support to verify and review as-built documentation
    • Provide support to maintain CAD library
  • Identify new data center cooling solutions and best practices
    • Determine feasibility
    • Develop necessary proof of concept
  • Mechanical review of Critical Environment Work Authorizations (CEWA) process to review and ensure proper procedures and steps are followed per standards
  • Travel required


Job Requirements


  • Undergraduate engineering degree with PE license or in process to complete examination for PE license
  • Mechanical engineering consulting experience
  • 2-5 years of data center related experience preferred
  • Must have an understanding of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and a desire to become proficient
  • Familiarity with building control systems and Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) concepts is a plus
  • Ability to implement  energy efficient best practices and cost reduction methodologies
  • Ability to leverage an understanding of scientific methods to research and implement new data center solutions
