Job Description

Cell Culture Specialist

Job Description:

The position is being floated in the Culture Process Development (CPD) group. The CPD group is responsible for developing robust processes for cell lines producing the protein therapeutics. These are proteins that are chosen by research units as the candidate molecules for the treatment of various medical conditions spread across oncology, neuroscience, inflammation and many others. The processes developed by the CPD group are used in GMP manufacturing facilities to produce the molecules in large quantities for clinical and commercial needs. Almost all the molecules currently produced employ Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells as the host cells. One of the vital components of process development is controlling the metabolism of the cells in culture. CHO cells consume large amounts of nutrients and divert significant part towards byproduct formation, which accumulate over time in the culture. At high levels of these by-products, cell growth and productivity is negatively affected. Over the past few years, many new insights into the regulation of energy metabolism have been identified and published. These new insights can be exploited to robustly control the metabolism of mammalian cells in culture.

  • Assess the impact of these new insights on CHO cell metabolism and will help devise strategies to modulate the same to improve the process robustness
  • Responsible for carrying out metabolic engineering of CHO cells using molecular biology techniques
  • Performing significant amount of shake flask and bioreactor experiments
