Job Description

Summary of Responsibilities

 

The Surgical Intensivist is a member of the ICU and Step-down team who oversees and directs the care of patients on a 12 bed intensive care unit (ICU). The incumbent applicant must be board-eligible or board-certified with added qualifications in critical care, and will have demonstrated a track record of excellence in clinical care. He/she will be assigned to the ICU and work with the critical care management team to provide patients with high quality, continuous and consistent care. This position coordinates the clinical care of the surgery patients and collaborates with the medical service on the care of their patients. The Surgical Intensivist will be expected to be proficient in ICU procedures and skills including, but not limited to: Insertion and monitoring of central lines and chest tubes, ventilatory management, transfusion medicine, wound management, and management of patients with unstable cardio-pulmonary status and sepsis. Additionally will be expected to work closely and collaborate with the Medical Intensivist.

Operations Management - Establishes long and short-range departmental goals by assessing internal and external conditions to coordinate with the Strategic Plan and Mission. Evaluates, analyzes, develops, implements and measures success of  department goals. Explores resource availability for alternate methods to achieve  operational objectives.

Process Management- Oversees daily departmental activities. Assures that departmental policies and procedures are followed in order to optimize efficiency and productivity through the use of human and other resources. Fosters and environment that supports smooth implementation of new approaches/programs.

Ability to inspire and motivate by modeling positive leadership behavior, establishing direction and allowing others to take lead in achieving the vision. Financial Management-Performs administrative duties including preparation and management of department budget, payroll, controlling expenses and overtime. Assists in strategic planning, financial analysis, forecasting, budgeting and long- range financial planning for the department to ensure alignment with goals and objectives.

Human Resource Management- Follows  policies and procedures in relation to the HR functions such as, interviewing, hiring, coaching, empowering, training, appraising, counseling and disciplining department employees. Seeks continuous learning opportunities for department staff and . Leverages department work force to maximize productivity while minimizing expense. Provides resources and removes barriers to staff to successfully accomplish their goals. Identifies patterns/needs to enhance the skills of  staff.

Communication- Effectively communicates and creates a shared responsibility by involving staff in daily operations, organizational changes, deliberations and decisions of the objectives and priorities . Interacts with staff by listening and addressing concerns/questions.

Professional Development- Responsible for personal professional development by proactively requesting feedback from staff. Participates in professional associations to stay abreast of changes in his/her field of expertise.

Time Management- Adapts thinking and processes to changes in circumstances quickly and positively. Adjusts schedules, tasks and priorities of department when necessary. Meets  departmental goals according to assigned timelines.

Quality - Establishes, maintains and is accountable for a program of continuous monitoring of departmental quality as required by hospital policy, Quality Management, EOC Committee, Joint Commission, New York State Department of Health and other regulatory agencies.

Quality - Maintains and is accountable for the unit (s) environment in constant readiness mode according to hospital policy, Joint Commission, Department of Health and other regulatory agencies. This includes, but is not limited to the Environment of Care, Infection Control, Life Safety, Fire Safety, HIPAA, supply and equipment management.

Safety - Actively participates in Safety Rounds and assures that all items are fixed within the prescribed timeframe. Escalates as necessary.

Follows and Assures Staff Follow Hospital Compliance Policies & Procedures- refers to and follows the Compliance Manual, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest requirements. Reports compliance questions and concerns and encourages staff to report compliance questions and concerns to the Compliance Officer and/or the Compliance Helpline 914-666-1913.

Licensed MD in New York State

*

The successful candidate will have completed a residency in General Surgery or anesthesia and be fellowship-trained in Critical Care or Trauma/Critical Care. The candidate must be able to be a team player and have the ability to build an excellent rapport with the Surgical specialties served as well as with Anesthesia, MICU and CCU
