Job Description

GKN is a global engineering and manufacturing company focused on the aerospace and automotive industries with operations in more than thirty countries and employs 43,000 people in its subsidiaries.  The St. Louis site mission is to delight the customer through innovative and best value global aerospace solutions.  We provide our customers unbiased design and development support in metals, composites and RTM assemblies to meet cost and performance objectives as well as manufacturing capabilities to meet those objectives.  We are currently seeking candidates for an open Design Engineer  IV for our St. Louis site. 

Job Purpose

To research, develop, analyze, design and test company complex products or processes.  To translate engineering and scientific concepts from ideas to useful products and product improvements or useful processes and process improvements.  May directly support the manufacturing process including processing technical support for materials, tooling, part fabrication and assembly.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Lead and plan research, development, analysis, design, and test of company products or processes using engineering and scientific principles to implement engineering solutions to meet organizational objectives.
  • Ensure the application of best practices and identify the need for enhanced processes, methods and tools.
  • Plan, schedule and lead others to produce technical work responsive to customer needs within allocated budget.
  • Analyze and verify product or process design and product performance for adequacy including reliability.
  • Responsible for ensuring product (including parts, assemblies or tools) are consistent with company and customer quality standards. 
  • Engineering Member of the Material Review Board
  • Research and develop material and processes that support the translation from abstract concepts to functional products.
  • Apply knowledge of engineering and scientific methods and tools to define and characterize behavior of products and processes. 
  • Integrate technical, cost, value and safety considerations into the product definition to comply with customer, regulatory and company requirements.  Documents results in drawings, data sets, reports specifications and supporting data.
  • May lead a project or program team, management and manufacturing staff to implement manufacturing process improvement initiatives to reduce changeover times, eliminate excess inventory, part travel and other forms of waste.
  • Develop engineering solutions to a wide range of complex technical problems, requiring ingenuity and innovation.  Exercise broad latitude in determining technical solutions. 
  • May interface with customers and suppliers to achieve cost effective, technically sound and functionally superior products.
  • Lead, support, identify or implement Lean initiatives to improve products and processes.  
  • Continuously improve product and processes via designs, work instructions statistical process control and other relevant methods and concepts. 
  • Provide technical guidance to less experienced staff; may act in a technical leadership capacity.
  • May perform other equivalent-level engineering duties as assigned.
  • May specialize in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: Design, Production (i.e., Manufacturing, Industrial), MRB or Liaison. 

Job Requirements


B.S. degree in engineering or related discipline or a minimum of 10 years of education and experience in lieu of an engineering degree.  Advanced degree preferred.  For design engineers, degrees must be conferred by an institution accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology (ABET), or equivalent accrediting organization outside the US.

Experience and Qualifications

A minimum eight years of engineering experience in an aerospace design/manufacturing environment working with composites and metals.  Strong PC skills (Excel, Access, Word and Project Manager), experience with engineering software including CATIA/UG/NX, modeling and CAD.
