Working within a dynamic and fast paced team environment, the Application Administrator is responsible for maintaining various middleware applications across all environments such as Development, QA, and Production. The ideal candidate must be a subject matter expert with various Oracle Middleware products and be able to apply experience to new platform deployments while anticipating the future support needs of the platform.

The ideal candidate will be able to:

  • Design and implement Middleware Solutions in a Linux / Unix environment. This includes: Application Servers, Web Servers, Messaging, Caching, Workflow, Monitoring, and Process Automation.
  • Analyze application performance to improve throughput and effectively utilize existing Middleware resources.
  • Monitor resource usage, makes adjustments when required, and maintains trending information to recommend expansion of Middleware resources.
  • Participate in the evaluation, selection, and implementation of new tools. This includes Setting up product demos, POC evaluation, collecting and summarizing feedback, and making recommendations. Upon product selection, Application Administrators coordinate the installation, process documentation, and peer training of new technologies.
  • Ensure the change management process is utilized effectively to ensure customer satisfaction as applications move from Development through to Production.
  • Participate in on-call production support activities based upon documented support procedures. Proactively puts procedures in place to prevent and reduce the severity of outages under the guidance of Senior Engineers.
  • Participate in advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis of site issues.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of the connections and dependencies between applications in the environment.
  • Document Middleware installations, processes, and architectural diagrams.
  • Proactively seek out on the job training from senior resources to increase both technical and professional skills.
  • Coordinate support activities with vendors as required.
  • Automation of manual operational processes by use of scripting and automation tools.
  • Compile with all policies, standards and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Familiar with server security practices and tools
  • Technical skills focused on uptime and availability of servers across all environments
  • Sufficient technical aptitude to understand and communicate the application impacts of low level system, data, and database changes to non-technical resources
  • Good written and verbal communications skills
  • Exposure to Agile or other Lean methodology
  • Ability to manage concurrent projects to plan
  • Demonstrated ability to execute and perform timely follow-up to ensure customer satisfaction

Experience Required

  • Five years experience administrating and/or configuring middleware components in the following areas:
    • Application Server: Oracle WebLogic w/Coherence, IBM WebSphere, Apache Tomcat, Redhat JBoss
    • Web Servers: Oracle HTTP, Apache, IHS, Lighttpd
    • Operating Systems: Linux, AIX, Solaris
    • Application Performance Management: dynaTrace, AppDynamics
    • Content Management Systems / Code Management: Fatwire / Oracle WebCenter Sites
    • Scripting languages: shell, perl, python, etc.
    • Experience working in a multi-tiered environment with a Java/JSP front end
  • Experience using or administrating Monitoring and/or Logging tools
  • Experience working in a Linux or UNIX environment
  • Supporting Web based applications in a distributed environment
  • Scripting expertise with Shell, Ruby Perl, Python, and/or Java
  • On-call support experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems (related/commensurate experience acceptable)
