Substance Abuse Counselor

Job Description

Substance Abuse Counselor for local nonprofit.  Must have masters in counseling, behavioral science, or related field.  Requires 2 years experience in areas of addictive and psychiatric disorders. Preference will b e given to applicants with a licensure in professional counseling or a DMH approved certification in addictions counseling.

Job Requirements

The counselor is responsible for providing the majority of individual and group counseling services to clients in a chemical dependency recovery program.  The counselor consults with other community agencies and the public in order to enhance the referral process.  The counselor will maintain a caseload of clients and be responsible for primary care from admission through follow-up and case file documentation.

Knowledge of individual, family and group behavior with special emphasis chemical addictions and HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.  Ability to make mental health assessments and develop appropriate therapeutic plans.  Knowledge of principals of counseling.  Ability to establish and maintain effective counseling relationships by gaining trust, cooperation and understanding of individual concerned.  Ability to establish and maintain rapport with community agencies.  Ability to make clear and pertinent statements orally and in writing.  Ability to relate to a wide variety of clientele.
