System Software Engineer (Java Developer)

Lifetouch Portrait Studios Inc. serves the portraiture needs of families and individuals through photographic studios located across the country.  Our photographers are experts at capturing the personalities of infants and toddlers, as well as large groups.  We are currently seeking a System Software Engineer (Java Developer) to be a part of this team!

We are looking for a problem-solver that is also a self-starter who will re-write systems and add business functionality using current technologies.  This role will support our manufacturing plant and support the integration with other departments. 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Performs business analysis on existing processes and design solutions aimed at streamlining those processes, eliminating non-value add steps, increasing speed of throughput, and improving application quality
  • Integrates applications by designing database architecture
  • Completes applications development by coordinating requirements, schedules, and activities; contributing to team meetings; troubleshooting development and production problems
  • Works with other software developers and QA to ensure coordination and consistency of development efforts, standards, and testing
  • Works on the complete lifecycle of application development, including analysis & design, development & testing
  • Fixes defects reported by QA in code and participate in peer reviews and program testing
  • Maintains and updates technical documentation for applications
  • Identifies and evaluates new technologies/techniques and recommends new software, technology, and services as needed
  • Recommends system solutions by comparing advantages and disadvantages of custom development and purchase alternatives.
  • Measures and monitors applications and is able perform in depth analysis of performance at all levels including application, network, DB and hardware
  • Updates job knowledge by researching new internet/intranet technologies and software products

  • Perform other projects or miscellaneous duties as requested or assigned. 

 

Job Requirements

Education:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or management information systems or equivalent experience

 

Experience:

 

  • Experience with creating back end services with robust RESTful API’s.
  • Minimum of 5+ years software development (desired 10+ years)
  • 5+ years of application development experience with Java, including threading, I/O optimization, OOD
  • 3+ years’ experience with Java web application servers (Glassfish, WebSphere, Tomcat)
  • Knowledge of relational databases (NoSQL a plus)
  • Low level image manipulation a plus (JAI, Intel image libraries)
  • Well versed in object oriented design, UX, and application exception handling
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including an ability to effectively communicate or present to non-technical internal customers

 

Other (knowledge, skills, and abilities):

 

  • Ability to solve problems and quickly understand new technologies
  • JPA, JAX-RS, Git, Maven
