Director of Special Events


  • Work closely with the Chief Development Officer to understand the strategic direction and how fundraising events are essential in the achievement of stated goals.
  • Coordinate volunteer and staff support to administer both event production and the fundraising efforts for major fundraising events
  • Work closely with volunteer leadership including the Special Events Committee for special events, particularly event chairs, to implement all event components.
  • Coordinate event donor prospects with all development divisions.
  • Define and put in writing policies and procedures for all fundraising events.
  • Develop and maintain a detailed timeline, budget (expense and net goal) and reporting structure designed to inform leadership of the status of each fundraising event.
  • Work closely with the Director, Volunteer Services to develop creative strategies to use volunteer resources to achieve revenue enhancement and expense savings for all fundraising events.
  • In collaboration with the Individual Giving team, implement high level donor stewardship and cultivation events.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning of the development department.
  • Provide management guidance and training to the Special Events staff to ensure the efficiency and support required to assist volunteers at all levels.
  • Provide on-going evaluation of and recommendations for improvement of existing events.

Job Requirements

Director of Special Events



  • College degree and at least four years’ experience in the professional administration of fundraising events IS A MUST FOR THIS POSITION!
  • Outstanding organizational skills, an attention to detail and knowledge of the Houston community.
  • Fundraising and management experience.
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups of volunteers and staff.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ongoing ability to work evenings and weekends, including some holidays in a fast-paced and demanding work environment, which frequently requires irregular hours.
