Assistant Food Service Worker

Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:   The Cook is responsible for the overall preparation and serving of meals.  Maintaining the cleanliness of the kitchen and cafeteria area.  This includes compliance with local, state and federal standards, tracking statistical information, food orders, menu planning and special events.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include the following. Other functions may be assigned as business conditions change.

  1. Prepare nutritious and portioned controlled attractive meals according to a pre-approved and rotating menu.
  2. Ensure menus are posted weekly and are reviewed and approved at least annually by a registered dietitian.
  3. Maintain cleanliness of kitchen and cafeteria area per health codes.
  4. Maintain daily meal count and report on a monthly basis.
  5. Develop menu planning and manage adherence to the menu.
  6. Develop food ordering process to maintain menu.
  7. Ordering and inventorying all kitchen and food supplies.
  8. Maintain inventory control of food items.
  9. Maintain and document all temperature controls of food, food preparations, cooler/freezer and dish washer temperature.
  10. Prepare meals for special events when necessary.
  11. Supervise resident and volunteer food handlers.
  12. Adheres to program and agency expectations as outlined in Volunteers of America’s policies and procedures.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or equivalent with one year experience in a related field preferred.  Ability to prepare and serve portion controlled nutritious meals and maintain cleanliness and inventory.

 LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Must read and write legibly.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
None designated.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Skills and ability to operate a computer and to use Word Perfect and company software. Skills and ability to organize and prioritize work. Skills and ability to meet deadlines and operate office equipment.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Standing and walking throughout the day.  May be required to lift up to 25 pounds. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Some exposure to violence from uncooperative clients.
