Job Description

SummaryThe purpose of the Inventory Control Supervisor is to oversee the Inventory Control Clerks and Leads performances as they maintain an accurate perpetual inventory.  This includes assisting in conducting cycle counts; and identifying, researching and solving product count inaccuracies to preserve data integrity.  The employee must be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and maintain the expected work pace and meet minimum productivity guidelines set by DPI.  The Inventory Supervisor is exposed to dry, refrigerated and freezer areas of a warehouse and may be exposed to one environment for a prolonged period of time. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Supervise the process associated with maintaining an accurate perpetual inventory, and accuracy of product line information, and identification of inaccuracy remedies.
  • Schedule and supervise the work force to meet daily operational demands including training, verifying certifications and qualifications, and monitoring individual employee productivity levels.
  • Apply interpersonal and communication skills to motivate the work force, relay growth opportunities and implement corrective measures if necessary to ensure productivity levels are met; provide performance reviews.
  • Apply high level conflict resolution skills and negotiation skills to interactions with multi levels of DPI personnel and 3rd party customers and vendors; apply communication skills to interactions with employees; resolve inventory discrepancies and communicate with multi-levels of DPI operation.
  • Generate, use and document standard or adhoc reports to monitor operations, research failure activity, report on objectives, through puts and KPI’s.
  • Analyze inventory imbalances that could not be resolved by Inventory clerks or leads.
  • Monitor product integrity by verifying product temperature, refrigeration operation and ensuring continuity of cold chain.
  • Evaluate HCM set-up and slotting to best assist all areas of DPI operation to include but not limited to Receiving, Warehousing and Shipping.
  • Perform cycle counts by reviewing documentation and verifying against perpetual stock in inventory.
  • Perform root cause analysis to determine inventory discrepancy issues, create and research alternative procedures and policies and present to Inventory Control Manager.
  • Protect DPI Inventory Control staff and employees by enforcing proper Personal Protective Equipment use, updating training and certifications, monitoring wage/hour law compliance, assuring compliance with OSHA and union rules and regulations, and monitoring compliance with, local state and federal food handling regulations.
  • Communicate and address concerns and issues from other departments, Inventory Clerks and Customers (internal and external).
  • Identify and research new procedures and protocols for process improvement; present these to Inventory Control Manager.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: An Associate’s degree and 3-5 years’ experience in a related field or a high school diploma and a combination of 5-7 years of college and experience is required. Accounting experience is preferred. The employee must be proficient in English and possess math skills proficient to calculate pallet quantities, and run data analysis. Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office programs experience (Excel, Word, Outlook) is required. Oracle (or AS400) experience is preferred; if none, must become proficient within 90 days of hire.  Previous experience with a slot picking program is preferred.  Experience as a certified powered industrial truck (PIT) operator is preferred; if none, must be able to pass certification within 90 days on the job.   Employee must be able to be certified for PIT operation by DPI.  

Work Environment:   The work environment is indoors and the employee may be exposed to cold room or freezer temperatures.  There is moderate noise level in warehouse environments with occasional to frequent honking of power jacks and forklifts for safety.  The floors may be concrete.


Work Hours:  The work schedule is either 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, or 4 days a week, 10 hours a day.  Start times vary.  Work hours and shifts are subject to change depending on operating business conditions and needs.  The employee may be required to work overtime, holidays or weekends.


Physical and Mental DemandsMedium Work, exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force seldom, up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  This job also requires frequent standing and walking.  Know, follow and enforce DPI grooming, hygiene and dress code policies including appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) for safety compliance.  Follow sequencing or order directions and apply knowledge of spatial relations product storage.  Understand recall procedures and reporting.  Know and follow protocols for accurate and proper paperwork and documentation delivery. Apply advanced analytic skills for resolving inventory disputes or errors; application of root cause analysis to prevent future discrepancies; apply intermediate to advanced skill with Excel for Inventory research, analysis, monitoring and resolving perpetual inventory discrepancies. Apply intermediate to advanced math skills to perform data analysis and track and report on inventory and KPI’s.  Apply high level conflict resolution skills and negotiation skills to interactions with multi levels of DPI personnel and and vendors.
