Employee Relations Specialist - Chicago

Job Description

Position Overview: 

Office is located at 1 South Wacker, Chicago, IL 60606.  Candidate would need to work out of Chicago office.  The Employee Relations Specialist will report directly to the Manager of Employee Relations. Overall, the primary focus of this position will be to provide advice, consultation, and guidance to support a positive employee relations environment. He/or she will enhance the level of employee relations support, by fostering a high level of employee trust, while providing appropriate coaching and advice to location leadership.  This position plays a pivotal role in mitigating risks and the need for third party representation.

 

Job Description:

  • Conduct prompt, thorough investigations in response to employee complaints. Identify, recommend, and oversee implementation of appropriate actions to accomplish a timely resolution of employee concerns.

  • Prepare well-documented written summaries of findings.

  • Explain company policies, procedures and governmental regulations, and the need for compliance to all levels of management.

  • Proactively serve as a liaison between team members and location management, addressing and resolving concerns in the workplace as they arise.

  • Maintain positive employee relations climate by responding to employees' concerns, addressing issues proactively and advising management regarding proper Company practices.

  • Meet with management to discuss possible employment actions to be taken.

  • Administer handling of unemployment claims, representing company when needed at hearings.

  • Assist management with handling and preparation of disciplinary actions, track and monitor data in HR system.

  • Develop and compile statistics and reports for management’s use.

  • Conduct exit interviews; compile data in a meaningful format to guide action planning.

  • Work with manager and training representative on annual engagement survey to ensure proper action planning via department workshops and feedback sessions.

  • Serve as an active team member, promoting and demonstrating PLS’ culture and core values through corresponding behavior and actions.

  • Assist all other HR functions on an as needed basis for outreach, job fairs, interviewing and other activities.

  • Help foster a work environment that promotes teamwork, performance feedback, recognition, mutual respect, and employee satisfaction.

  • Perform or assist with other duties and projects as assigned.

Job Requirements

Job Requirements:

  • At least five years of progressive experience in human resources with a specialization in employee relations in a multi- unit, geographically diverse field-support position within a fast paced industry such as retail or hospitality

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills

  • Must have demonstrated problem solving, judgment and conflict resolution skills with the ability to provide high quality independent analysis, conclusions, and recommendations

  • Knowledge and understanding of federal, state and local employment laws and regulations

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions and company policies

  • A demonstrated team-orientation with all levels of employees

  • Ability to quickly build trusting relationships, gain credibility, and partner with leaders and peers

  • Ability to effectively cope with change and manage stressful situations

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations

  • Proven planning, priority setting and time management skills

  • Ability to achieve results in a fast-paced dynamic environment with shifting priorities and deadlines

  • Strong technical/computer skills including Word, Excel, and Power Point

  • Enthusiasm for business and a passion for driving results

  • Demonstrated organization, strong attention to detail and follow-up skills

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift 15 lbs.
  • Travel up to 25%
