Job Description


This role will support the biotech business unit of my client’s total, global business.  The Business Unit Finance Manager will have a key role in monitoring, analyzing, and communicating, to various peers, managers, and senior leaders at both business unit and corporate levels, all inputs which drive the financial performance and results of the business unit.  This lead role will provide significant concentration and diligence in supporting the financial management of the unit’s active manufacturing, engineering, service and spare parts projects within the various product lines to ensure the business is driving and delivering to expected performance results.


  • Responsible for day-to-day general ledger accounting and reconciliation, financial reporting, and analysis around key business drivers including orders, backlog, revenue, gross margin, SG&A expenses, operating profit, project cash flow, utilization, and headcount for business segment and roll up to corporate.
  • Analyze and respond to inquiries on business unit financial cost and project performance and forecasts at various intervals during the month as well as during month end, quarter end, and year end closing periods.
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet, department expense, and profit / loss (income statement) reports and communicate variances to plan and forecast for business unit and corporate management review.
  • Engage in weekly / monthly project reviews and analyze project financial performance for adherence to booked expectations as well as for early detection of potential improvements or risk to financial results.  Report, to business unit and corporate management, any inconsistencies, improprieties, or improvement opportunities.
  • Interface with project management to review and correct, as necessary and applicable, any discrepancies or inaccuracies in project costs.  Drive accuracy in project revenue recognition.
  • Analyze data to ensure adherence to procedures, standards, business practices, and settlement rules.  Review monthly expenses to ensure that expenses are booked correctly.  Work with the corporate accounting team, as necessary and applicable, to generate any necessary reclassifications in a timely manner.
  • Provide timely, relevant and accurate reporting and analysis of the actual results of the business unit’s financial performance against historical, budgeted, and forecasted planning results to facilitate decision-making toward the achievement of the financial plan.  Prepare financial reports, charts, tables, presentation slides and other information as requested.
  • Maintain and populate various financial planning databases and standard templates distributed, for use by all Business Unit Finance Leads, during the business and financial planning processes, ensuring quality, accuracy and focused analytic review.  Assist in the development of annual budgets, and monthly and quarterly forecasts.
  • Demonstrate appropriate understanding / working knowledge of analytical concepts, accounting principles and internal controls.
  • Identify poor quality through financial trending.  Recommend actions for improvements.
  • Engage in special projects as assigned by business unit and corporate management.

Job Requirements



  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting


  • At least 5 to 7 years of relevant experience
  • Experience working within a manufacturing / operations / project based environment required


  • Strong communication, analytical and data organization / interpretation skills
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a challenging, fast paced environment
  • Maturity, professionalism, and high level of discretion is required
  • Knowledge of procedural controls and data validation techniques required
  • Strong work ethic with a positive, can-do attitude
  • Independent worker and analytical thinker with ability to conduct review, data analysis and resolve discrepancies
  • Ability to interact with management and senior leadership at the business segment and corporate levels
  • Strong understanding of financial statements
  • Project based analysis, tracking and planning
  • Prior forecasting and reporting experience
  • Strong skills with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)
  • Familiarity with, knowledge and application of business systems (Cognos and Hyperion a plus)
