Job Description

  • Responsible for coding inpatient, outpatient (Observation and Surgical) ancillary department medical records, and abstracting information into hospital system. 
  • Responsible for final coding of all hospital medical records utilizing ICD9, CPT, & HCPCS coding books, 3M encoder, Nextgen computer system, abstracting designated medical records information into NextGen. 
  • Monitor unbilled account reports for outstanding or un-coded discharges. 
  • Keep abreast of coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements.
  • Obtain training and complete ICD-10 training for hospitals.
  • Abstract quality indicators for CMS to ensure appropriate requirements have been met for submission to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. 
  • Abstract Blue Cross and Blue Shield severity and intensity data to ensure appropriate requirements have been met for submission to Blue Cross and Blue Shield. 
  • Analyze records for Medical Staff quality indicators.  

Job Requirements

  • An Associate’s Degree or equivalent formal training preferred. Will consider other certification approved by either AAPC or AHIMA.   
  • 3 to 5 years of hospital coding experience is required. 
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA). 
  • Knowledge of ICD-9-CM, CPT and HCPCS coding systems. 
  • Medical terminology, good communication skills and attention to detail, ICD-10 knowledge/training.
