Job Description

The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine is seeking Maintenance Technician / Plumber to perform a wide variety of corrective and preventive maintenance with an emphasis on plumbing and process piping systems in order to assure proper and safe operations to the entire facility and all occupants. Assignments are broad in nature and encompass maintenance and operation of all building equipment.


  • Performs emergency, corrective, and preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, adjustments, and repairs on plumbing and process piping systems, HVAC systems, hot water boilers, steam generation and distribution components, water treatment systems, liquid waste neutralization system, reverse osmosis/deionized water system,  diesel generators, co-generator,  BAS system,   Chillers, Fire Protection Systems, Security Systems, Lighting, general Building Maintenance, and other tasks as they apply to demands of the department.
  • Monitors and responds to local alarm systems on HVAC, Plumbing, Fire and Security systems.  Acts as primary facility security, maintenance and operations response personnel during off hours, nights, weekends and holidays via on call rotation. Provides immediate diagnosis and remedy to facility issues and/or contacts formal on-call maintenance personnel and/or contractors for assistance. Performs monitoring and operations of facility operations at maximum efficiency and reliability while meeting all regulatory requirements.
  • Conducts rounds of building equipment and systems. Utilizes Building Automation System to monitor and make appropriate adjustments to equipment settings as necessary. Records readings on operational logs.
  • Utilizes CMMS to track preventive and corrective maintenance tasks and create work orders.  Provide detailed written and oral reports / presentation on equipment utilization, round sheets, records, and daily pass down logs for internal use along with state and federal agencies.
  • Strives to maintain a zero personal injury record as serves as a role model for others with regards to workplace safety
  • Completion of corrective and preventive maintenance work orders in a safe, efficient, and specified manner, on time and without prompting with minimal rework.  Effectively plans and coordinates activities.
  • Demonstrate a pattern of continuous professional improvement and rapid learning through OJT and formal training.  Follows proper SOPs and/or develops them as needed.
  • Ability to effectively work with a team or alone.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of activities, proactively addresses system issues without prompting and provides sound recommendations on current or proposed facilities equipment.  Effectively communicates both orally and written.

Job Requirements

  • Current trade license P1 or P2 required. Knowledge of plumbing and process equipment systems, mechanical & electrical equipment, utilities, distribution systems, controls and/or HVAC systems, including maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair that is normally acquired through technical school/ trade institute is required. Other means of acquiring this knowledge may be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.  
  • Ability to read schematics, blueprints, technical manuals, engineering drawings and sequences of operations.     
  • Understanding of Building Automation Systems, Fire Protection Systems, Security Systems, HVAC Systems, Lighting, Process Equipment Systems (autoclaves,  bottle washers, and rack washers), and Building Maintenance.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair Utility Plant equipment & components.  
  • Ability to read, understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Analytical ability for problem solving and to communicate effectively with others in writing and verbally.
  • Ability and willingness to rapidly learn new technical skills and apply them in the maintenance and operation of the facility. Analytical ability for problem solving and to communicate effectively with others in writing and verbally. 
  • Ability to bend, squat or crouch, crawl, kneel, stoop, stretch and stand and/or work in cramped areas for prolonged periods of times while repairing equipment both at floor level, overhead, and or/in confined space areas.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders (both inclined and vertical).
  • Ability to enter man-holes, vaults, and other classified and unclassified confined spaces.  A respirator and/or specialized personal protective equipment may be required to access certain confined spaces.
  • Certification in confined space entry or ability to qualify within 6 months. 
  • With or without assistance, must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and job-related materials and/or equipment.
