Job Description

As the newest member of our research team, this industrial microbiologist will serve as the technical expert for the creation of natural flavor ingredients via biotransformation or metabolic engineering in microbial systems.  Not only will they contribute to development and execution of foundational research portfolios, but they will also expand our internal know-how in natural ingredient development as it relates to flavor ingredient processes and technologies.

While this person will work independently to plan and execute experimental studies on lab and pilot scale, they will also collaborate on global interdisciplinary project teams with internal and external partners. Will work to maintain/build relationships with ingredient and technology suppliers and research institutions. Key purpose of position will include development of lab scale processes and contribution towards commercial process development.


  • Design, plan and execute experimental studies focused on development of enzymatic or fermentation processes.
  • Operate various types of equipment on lab scale including fed batch fermenters, GC and HPLC.
  • Contribute expert knowledge on projects in route selection or development via activities such as project planning, literature searches and feasibility studies.
  • Participate in the creative process to build the foundational research portfolio.
  • Communicate research results via technical reports and other communication channels

Success Profile

  • Ph.D. Degree in Microbiology or Biochemistry with exposure to industrial research and/or development;
  • Knowledge of biological pathways and its application to chemical production required.
  • Experience with protein expression adn metabolic engineering required.
  • Chemical analysis including MS and NMR required.
  • Extensive technical skills and knowledge of scientific methods and processes as applied to biological systems in the development of fermentations towards chemical manufacture.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated collaborative innovation skills.
  • Creative and analytical thinking, problem solving, and organizational capabilities.
