Job Description

RN / Registered Nurse / Director of Oncology 




Basic Function:


Responsible, jointly with Cancer Center Medical Director, to manage the functions of the Cancer Center, ensuring accreditation for all areas.

Ensures quality patient care and efficient processes.   

Must ensure adequate staffing in all designated departments.  

Coordinates services with all areas involved with outpatient cancer care, promoting a team approach.

Supervision:

Reports directly to the VP Clinical Services/CNO

Principle responsibilities:

1.      Responsible for assuring nursing services are rendered in accordance with the mission, vision, and strategic plan of the Cancer Center.

2.      Works collaboratively with Medical Director to provide overall direction and coordination of the clinical aspects of care to ensure quality and integrative functioning of services specific to the care for the patient at risk or with a cancer diagnosis.

3.      Works collaboratively with Medical Director to ensure Cancer Center is in compliance with all policies, core measures, HCAHPS, patient safety, and patient satisfaction goals; develops action plans based on identified trends and variances.

4.      Responsible for measuring, managing, monitoring, agreed upon Cancer Center quality measures; develops action plans based in identified trends and variances; reports Cancer Center quality measures to VP of Clinical Services/CNO.

5.      Works collaboratively with physician to lead performance improvement focusing on:

§  Quality

§  Patient safety

§  Patient satisfaction

§  Access to care

§  Outcomes including:

-          Applicable care management guidelines

-          Development of evidence based clinical pathways

-          Clinical audits

-          Clinical outcome analysis

-          Oncology operational studies

6.      Ensures that all services in the Cancer Center are provided in a manner of quality consistent with professional standards.

7.      Works collaboratively with Medical Director to establish clinical policies and procedures for the Cancer Center, which will fulfill the requirements of the Medical Center, Medical Staff, Joint Commission, and any other applicable accreditation agency or licensing body.

8.      Collaborates with Medical Director, providers, and clinical staff in long and short term planning efforts, assisting in the growth and service line development, attending planning retreats and governance meetings providing advice and direction to medical and Senior Management in the development of policies promoting quality initiatives, patient safety, efficient medical care and management strategies consistent with the Cancer Center’s strategic plan.

9.      Ensures the coordination of the Cancer Center’s program activities with other Medical Center programs and departments.

10.  Shares in the fiscal responsibility with Medical Director by participating in equipment purchase planning and decision making, as well as coordinating efforts to ensure areas of responsibility operate in a fiscally responsible manner.

11.  Works collaboratively with Medical Director in developing cost effective approaches to clinical resource utilization and increased value for our cancer patients.

12.  Assists Medical Director in researching and developing new and innovative cancer programming and any accompanying accreditation process.

13.  Makes recommendations on professional service issues specific to Cancer Center.

14.  Supervises staff and manages day to day Human Resource responsibilities for the Cancer Center. This includes, but is not limited to, hiring, disciplinary action, termination, staff scheduling, performance evaluation, and day to day employee issues. Responsible for creating a positive environment that values productively, teamwork, and creativity.

15.  Responsible for Cancer Center daily operations. Responsible for daily problem solving, supplies, facilities management, meeting operational and capital budget; maintains a high degree of knowledge in reimbursement trends for outpatient cancer services and monitors compliance with established charge entry procedures. Works closely with marketing department to market Cancer Services.

16.  Works collaboratively with Medical Director to identify educational needs, providing opportunities for employees to enhance their technical, professional, and leadership skills.

17.  Monitors operational, quality and customer satisfaction, and develops/executes action plans to overcome deficiencies through implementation of best practices.

18.  Works collaboratively with Medical Director to investigate and resolve patient incidents and documents as required.

19.  Conducts all aspects of the job in an ethical manner in support of the Cancer Center’s commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.

Documentation:

1.      Ensures that documentation is done in a timely, accurate and concise manner while following Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center Standards.

Communication:

1.      Demonstrates effective communication methods and skills, using appropriate reporting structures.

2.      Demonstrates appropriate delegation of tasks and duties in the direction and coordination of health care team members, patient care, and unit activities.

3.      Formulates and uses effective working relationships with all health care team members, patient, and patient's significant other.

Professionalism:

1.      Maintains confidentiality of all patient information, including that of family, friends, and staff who may be patients.

2.      Demonstrates a sound knowledge base in the care of and decision making for designated patients.

3.      Participates actively in staff development activities, including unit meetings.

4.      Participates in development and attainment of unit, departmental, and organizational goals.

5.      Seeks validation of knowledge base, skill level, and decision making as necessary; assertively seeks guidance in areas of question.

6.      Demonstrates self-directed learning and participates in continuing education for own professional development.

7.      Participates in committees, task forces, and/or presenting educational activities as opportunities arise.

8.      Is tolerant of staff who is learning and facilitates professional growth and development of peers.

9.      Participates in the orientation of new staff and/or students.

10.  Performs efficiently in emergency situations, following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate person, and documenting events.

11.  Involvement in professional organization is encouraged.

12.  Serves as an advocate for the Cancer Center in our community and with our Medical Staff.

Risk Management:

1.      Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient rights as identified within the institution.

2.      Practices effective problem identification and resolution skills.

3.      Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and unit functions, and strives to manage situations to reduce risk factors.

4.      Participates in Performance Improvement and patient safety activities as activities arise.

5.      Timely filing of all variance reports with medical center's Risk Manager.

Job Requirements


RN / Registered Nurse / Director of Oncology 


Minimum qualifications:


1.      BSN required.

2.      A minimum of two years of experience in Cancer related field required.

3.      A minimum of two years leadership experience required.

4.      Excellent interpersonal, decision making, facilitation, conflict resolution and investigative skills.

5.      Ability to supervise and train staff including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling assignments.

6.      Knowledge of clinical operations, medical terminology, levels of care, treatment modalities, and the present health care delivery system.

7.      High degree of skill in interpersonal relations with the ability to deal effectively on a one-to-one and group basis with physicians, nursing staff, administration, and other hospital departments.

8.      Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.

9.      Strong strategic and critical thinking skills, self-directed, goal oriented, and visionary.


10.  Ability to coach employees, provide support and ability to foster teamwork and promote change.
