We don’t operate like most companies our size – we just can’t!  As a result, we are looking to get ahead of the Open Source Database Market.

Reporting to the Sr. Manager of Database Administration, you will be responsible for knowing our Open Source technology options and how they can work within our enterprise.  You will be taking something brand new and deploying to the business in a systematic and repeatable path.  We need your expertise in integrating this technology for our business where it makes sense.

You will also be responsible for all aspects of Open Source databases, will focus on the establishing operational procedures, services catalog, SLA’s, operational best practices, third party support, backups and monitoring . You will also serve as a liaison to various organizations, works in conjunction with technical colleagues to rectify issues, assess needs, and develop solutions to make processes more efficient.

This is a greenfield opportunity and we need your expertise in large enterprise implementation and knowledge of open source database technologies:
  • Technologies:  PostgresSQL, Raven, MySQL, MongoDB, Cassandra, Hadoop, Hbase
  • Activities: Architect, Analyze, Automate, Build, Configure, Deploy, Document, Fix, Install, Integrate, Prototype, Load Test, Migrate, Monitor, Optimize, Scale, Script, Support, Test, Train, Troubleshoot, Tune

Essential Duties:
  • Design, build and manage production database environments that span multiple data centers and technologies
  • Troubleshoot database performance problems and tuning
  • Collaborate with internal teams and customers with design
  • Provide after-hours support when needed

We expect that it will take some time to build this and get it into place.  In the first 6 months, you will be working to take the technology and operationalize it.  You will be establishing SLA’s and building relationships with Development and other groups to forecast and build these databases.  You will have to use your existing tools to fabricate something that doesn’t exist today.  This is truly a rare opportunity in a large organization to build something completely new.  There will be challenges – you will have to be comfortable working in ambiguity with little direction.  But, when complete, you will have accomplished something that will change the way DIRECTV does business.
