Electrical Design Engineer

Applies principles and techniques of electrical engineering to accomplish goals. Develops, designs, assembles and tests electro-mechanical systems, components and equipment.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Execute assigned electrical engineering activities from conceptual design through system fabrication, testing and the transition to production.
  • Propose solutions, prove concepts, evaluate new technologies and design trade-offs. 
  • Create, and develop analog and digital systems with an emphasis on power supply, power management and electromechanical designs; execute design testing, including reliability analysis, EMI/RFI testing, circuit simulations, bread boarding. 
  • Demonstrate proficiency in electronics; including digital and analog Printed Circuit Board layout, construction techniques and PCB assembly.
  • Work closely with mechanical engineers to develop electromechanical products.
  • Directs activities to ensure that manufacturing, construction, installation, and operational testing conform to functional specifications and customer requirements.
  • Provide engineering support to the concept evaluation, procurement, manufacturing and product support functions. 
  • Provide design solutions that address expressed and implied (through industry knowledge) product requirements. 
  • Work closely with other disciplines and share innovative ideas with engineering design team.
  • Formally report product status and testing results in a timely fashion.
  • Apply fundamental engineering principles to design challenges while being aware of the implications of cost, schedule and manufacturability of the product.
  • Maintain an awareness of changes in the industry and in the development of components that may assist future design activities.
  • Travel (up to 25%) may be required. 
  • Other duties may be assigned.

  • Relies on a minimum of five to eight years of electrical design experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. 
  • Experience with designing embedded systems a plus.
  • Strong electronic trouble shooting and problem solving skills, experience in electronic packaging and PCB design. 
  • Hands-on experience with circuit simulation and modeling software (PSpice & Mathcad). 
  • Experience with Altium (preferred) or Orcad is required.
  • Mechanical aptitude is required and 
  • experience with Solidworks is considered a plus.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineer with 6 to 8 years of related experience and/or training required.
  • Experience with designing embedded systems and ability to write C/C++ and code for PIC microcontrollers is preferred.
  • Specific experience related to the design, development, testing, manufacturing and documentation of switch mode power supply products (15W-300W) is highly preferred and an in-depth knowledge of power supply technologies: flyback, forward, half-bridge, buck and boost (power Factor) converters considered a plus.

Language Ability

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquires or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or co-workers. 
  • Ability to write articles for publication and presentation that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to co-workers, management, and the general public. 
  • Mathematical Ability
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts to electrical engineering problems 

Computer Skills
  • Must have working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail and internet software. Proficiency in SolidWorks considered a plus. Proficiency in ECAD software considered a plus.

Other Skills

  • Have the ability to use electronic instrumentation and basic mechanical inspection tools 
  • Requires excellent communication and organizational skills.
