Job Description

This position will manage all pharmacy inpatient, HTC and ambulatory operations to support improve and enhance patient care. Responsible for overseeing and implementing existing and new programs and educating, training and developing supervisors, leads, staff, residents and students. This position will assist the Chief of Pharmacy with the ongoing maintenance of all programs and documentation related to quality, regulatory, daily operations and supply chain as required by hospital policy, state and federal licensing and accrediting organizations. Directly manages the Sterile Products Lead, Operations Leads, Technician Leads and Applications Support Analyst and directs and supports technicians, students, interns and patient care and clinical pharmacists. Responsible for hiring, evaluation and termination of direct reports and this position reports directly to the Chief of Pharmacy Services.

Position Duties

1. Responsible for effectively leading, developing, implementing and maintaining staff orientation and training plan and activities for technicians, tech students, support staff, professionals and operations leaders. Assures completion of all training and orientation documentation as required in a timely manner.
2. Actively oversees and assures compliance and accountability of controlled substances according to state and federal regulations and completes all documentation needed for annual Board of Pharmacy inspections.
  • Serves as the Designated Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) for the Hospital Pharmacy
  • Oversees waste, return and destruction of pharmaceuticals
  • Assures licenses and permits are current and posted
  • Serves as a primary contact for the Board of Pharmacy
3. Actively contributes to the pharmacy department pharmacoeconomic efforts and formulary management and assists the Chief of Pharmacy Services. Works in collaboration with the Pharmacy Business and Clinical Managers with developing and implementing cost reduction strategies to maintain costs within budget.

  • Actively manages non-formulary requests in conjunction with the Clinical Pharmacy Manager
  • Assures availability of pharmaceuticals for patient care
4. Develop and enforce policies and procedures that insure appropriate, cost-effective and safe medication use and maintain the approved hospital formulary. Effectively develops and implements pharmacy services in collaboration with associated department services.
  • Responsible for leading and developing Pharmacy Operations Standard Operating Procedures for medication management and general pharmacy operations
  • Serves as an expert for State and Federal Statues, Joint Commission and CMS standards
5. Actively leads daily hospital and ambulatory pharmacy operations and maintains departmental operational, compliance and quality control programs related to medication procurement, security, storage, preparation, recalls, shortages and dispensing. Provides administrative oversight for retail pharmacy services and designated retail manager.
  • Maintains medication incident reports as appropriate
  • Maintains an active role and leads the Medication Management Teams
  • Insures that the department is in compliance with Joint Commission, federal, state and local, CMS and hospital requirements.
  • Plans for advancement and implementation of Best Practice pharmacy operations
  • Supports and assures compliance of 340B programs in conjunction with the Pharmacy Business Manager and the Supply Chain staff
  • Provide oversight for HTC Specialty Pharmacy Services (HOPE)
6. Actively participates in hospital QA and Safety committees, P&T, multidisciplinary teams and projects, and provides leadership as assigned. Manages and provides leadership for operations clinical contracts, new projects and vendors in collaboration with the Clinical and Pharmacy Business Managers.

  • Serves as Project Manager for designated operations projects
7. Responsible for assisting the Chief of Pharmacy Services with department development and managing operations strategic planning goals and objectives that are consistent with the Hospital budget goals and metrics.
8. Manages daily operations of automated dispensing technology, other pharmacy operations technology and information systems and consults as an expert in these areas. Oversees the technology and operation of the Pharmacy, Ambulatory Services Areas and Centers and Sterile Products Area (SPA). Maintains medication supply inventory products, in conjunction with the Pharmacy Business Manager and supply chain staff, at defined levels for the main pharmacy and remote sites to meet daily patient care needs and annual budget goals.
9. Directly supervises and insures provision of on time 90 day, annual, periodic and for cause improvement evaluations and competency training for patient care pharmacists, technicians, tech students, pharmacy interns and operations pharmacist and technician leaders. Contributes to the evaluations and competency training of the Pharmacy Buyer, 340B Coordinator, support staff and clinical pharmacists within pharmacy operations.
  • Implements department based and Human Resources reward and recognition programs
  • Actively participates in employee engagement surveys, action planning and execution
  • Actively monitors and completes performance improvement plans for corrective discipline
  • Give effective and proactive ongoing feedback to direct reports and the staff for successes and improvements needed
10. Actively and effectively serves as the primary contact and liaison for pharmacy operations, administrative issues and requests for customer service support within the organization and provides timely and efficient follow-up, problem resolution and communication to staff and customers. Supports the duties of the Chief of Pharmacy in their absence as needed.
11. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.

Job Requirements

Education Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree (BS) or Doctoral Degree ( Pharm.D) in Pharmacy (Required)
  • Master’s Degree preferred (Preferred)
Experience Requirements
  • Five years of experience in hospital pharmacy practice in a pediatric environment or equivalent. (Required)
  • Three years of management experience or equivalent (Required)
  • Experience in Formulary development and management. (Preferred)
  • Hospital Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee experience (Preferred)
  • Experience with various pharmacy operations related technology and automated dispensing and inventory control systems and applications. (Required)
Certification/License/Registry Requirements
  • Current licensure or eligible as a Pharmacist either by reciprocity or examination by the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy. (Required)
  • Current BLS or PALS certification for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association. (Preferred)

  • Experience working in an office environment and possess organizational skills to meet deadlines. (Required)
  • Self-motivated; ability to work well with interdisciplinary teams. (Required)
  • Excellent communication skills to include oral and written comprehension at all levels. (Required)
