Job Description

The Senior Engineer – NY Energy Manager will be responsible for the development, implementation, and management of projects associated with the NY Energy Manager initiative. The Senior Engineer – NY Energy Manager will work extensively with building energy performance data such as monthly utility data, system level, and device level data flowing from interval meters, building energy management, and control systems to identify energy savings opportunities that can be realized through building optimization, operations and maintenance. The Senior Engineer will assist with facility sub-metering projects and coordinate integration of sub-meter data with the NY Energy Manager data platform.

NY Energy Manager will serve as statewide a virtual hub for continuous monitoring, analysis, forecasting, and management of customer energy supply, consumption and costs. NY Energy Manager will help reduce customer energy usage and costs overall by improving facility operations and maintenance, identifying cost-effective energy efficiency measures, and potentially reducing peak demand.

  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and management of projects associated with the NY Energy Manager initiative.
  • Responsible for providing insight into the design, calculations and operational processes of NYPA’s energy efficiency efforts to improve efficiency savings.
  • Develop equipment specifications and design packages and provide technical oversight for all NY Energy Manager, Energy Efficiency, related projects within applicable industry standards.
  • Evaluate technical proposals and electrical equipment functional designs, and perform failure evaluations.
  • Review work produced by other engineers, including the designs and specifications, and provide oversight of outside consultants.
  • Develop designs, specifications and engineered solutions for various electrical/mechanical equipment and systems’ problems or improvements
  • Perform inspections and evaluations on vendor products to ensure engineering requirements and NYPA’s needs are satisfied.
  • Ensure consistent and transparent reporting is developed and maintained providing a common, consistent and transparent approach to reporting energy efficiency to the NY Energy Manager Plan.
  • Actively participate in meetings with state agencies/authorities, the Governor’s Office and other stakeholders by developing and conducting presentations outlining the principles of the program and the progress of the NY Energy Manager initiative.
  • Develop and implement new and creative ways to move project forward to successful implementation.
  • Provide guidance to the Program Analyst in tracking and maintaining the NY Energy Manager database.
  • Manage the maintenance of records, tracking the status of energy efficiency projects at state agencies/authorities.
  • Represent NYPA and NYS at meetings, conferences and industry forums on topics related to NY Energy Manager.

Job Requirements

  • Knowledge of various approaches to energy analysis, as well as terminology and concepts around energy performance metrics, energy engineering and facilities management
  • Demonstrated ability to identify energy management and engineering problems and propose workable solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of building control systems.
  • Demonstrated ability in Microsoft Excel, and other analytical tools and applications.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and a team oriented approach are required to plan, execute and complete multiple assignments.
  • Strong organizational skills are required.

  • Ability to analyze existing conditions in a facility, complex issues related to contracts, equipment design and operation, and environmental concerns as they relate to customer requirements and develop cost effective, innovative engineering solutions to non-routine problems. Must be able to develop multiple recommendations to problems allowing customers a choice of solutions.
  • Proficient with local/state code requirements.
  • Must be able to communicate regularly with state agencies, Governor’s Office and others on progress/status of projects and goal attainment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate relevant program/project information and updates to Senior Management.
  • Ability to communicate complex and technical information to a diverse, non-technical audience in a comprehensible manner

  • Solid understanding of the electric utility and energy services industries is required.
  • Strong understanding of NYPA’s policies, operations, procedures and business objectives as well as those of the customers and understanding of NYPA’s interaction with other utilities regulatory agencies and customers is preferred.
  • Ability to effectively apply NYPA methodology and enforce project standards to minimize exposure and risk on projects.

Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Civil, Structural, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering discipline is required.
  • An advanced degree in an Engineering discipline is preferred.
  • Minimum of 11+ plus years of similar experience. In addition, incumbent must have a proven track record that reflects his/her in-depth knowledge and experience in Project Management multi discipline engineering.
  • A NYS Professional Engineering (PE) license, and/or an Association of Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification, is required.
  • Professional certification such as Project Management Professional Certification (PMPC) is preferred
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in building’s operations and maintenance with hands on experience in programing controls with a focus on energy conservation.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in supporting customers in energy efficiency analysis, project implementation, and building commissioning.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in supervising staff is required.
  • Strong experience and familiarity with the New York energy/utility industry is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience or in-depth knowledge in Project Management multi discipline engineering is preferred.
