Job Description

Search underway for a Public Relations Director/Communications Director to join a San Francisco based Pharmaceutical Company.  This individual will be responsible for the creation and execution of a companywide unified internal and external communications strategy aimed at building awareness of the company, its mission and product(s) with key stakeholders. As a secondary role, the PR Director/Director of Communications will also serve as a backup for the marketing function for pre-launch and launch activities. 


  • Ensuring on time and quality completion of communication plans and projects, through a collaborative cross-functional effort with internal staff, PR agency, consultants, commercial partners and the community
  • Developing the department goals and budgets as well as, communication plans and platforms
  • Leading all communication channels including communications spanning media (online and print), website and social media, public relations, advertising, SEO, annual conferences and trade shows, advertising, and branded collateral (including brochures and videos)
  • Analyzing the effectiveness of the strategies and programs, and monitoring competitive activities and market trends to ensure success in achieving functional goals
  • Working closely with the Chief Operating Officer in all aspects of public media management, including developing media plans and programs, media talking points, Q&As, media training and communications, fielding and participating in media interviews and serving as a company spokesperson
  • Liaising with commercial partners for joint communication initiatives
  • Directing the company’s response to external inquiries, primarily the press, to effectively communicate its position on certain matters and ensure quality regional and national media coverage
  • Developing original, creative and persuasive communication programs for a variety of public sector audiences  and channels (e.g. social media, direct-to-consumer, partnerships with providers, etc.)
  • Managing budgets for assigned responsibilities
  • Developing and maintaining a performance tracking system (including the development of a market research plan) to ensure communications strategies and programs are achieving the goals
  • Leading efforts to build a positive corporate reputation through a corporate visibility plan
  • Ensuring compliance with pharmaceutical industry regulations, company values and standards of ethical behavior, company policies and procedures, including communications and marketing activities as well as interactions with customers

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in Public Relations/Communications in healthcare
  • 5 years of experience working within a pharmaceutical company in PR
  • Understanding of FDA guidelines - including social media and public relations guidance, as well as the Sunshine Act
  • Proven track record of success working with the U.S. media – both traditional and social
  • Proven experience in marketing communications with the ability to write creative, concise and persuasive marketing material
  • Strong leadership skills with a successful track record building and managing small teams
