Job Description

Position Summary:

DIRECTV is looking for a database engineer/architect that will comfortably wear the hat of a database architect and database administrator within the Broadcast Software Engineering organization.  This self-starting database technologist will be responsible for a large Unix-based heterogeneous database environment that will include Oracle, IBM DB2 and Sybase in development, test and laboratory pre-production environments.   This individual’s tool bag will consist of top notch trouble shooting and performance tuning skills coupled with innovative technical thinking.  Experience with open source databases and cloud are a bonus.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and deploy appropriate RDBMS solutions (Oracle, IBM DB2, Sybase) as required in pre-production environments
  • Collaborate with development and testing to achieve maximum value and utility from the database architecture
  • Maintain current heterogeneous database architecture on Linux platforms including but not limited to VLDBs in the multi TB ranges
  • Plan and execute data and database migrations between RDBMS’s, OS’s, servers and datacenters
  • Coordinate with development leads on testing efforts to ensure high quality software, high performance solutions and high availability architecture is adhered to manage offshore team members

Job Requirements


Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in Oracle, IBM DB2 and Sybase database administration
  • Experience with UNIX/Linux
  • Experience with disaster recovery
  • Experience with database migration
  • Experience with Very Large Databases (VLDBs)
  • Experience with high availability solutions (RAC, HADR, Replication)
  • Knowledge of Software Configuration Management concepts and methodologies.
  • Proficiency with one of the source control tools (e.g. Subversion, CVS).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate technical issues and solutions to all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent multitasking and time management skills with consistent attention to detail
  • Ability to clearly write technical documents
  • Proficiency in standard MS Office applications
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Good leadership, facilitation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work across functional lines and at many levels.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, constantly changing environment

Desired Qualifications:

  • MS degree in Computer Science
  • Oracle DBA Certification
  • Experience with Oracle Enterprise Manager
  • Experience with Golden Gate
