Job Description


Patient Access representatives facilitate a welcome and easy access to the facility and are responsible for establishing an encounter for any patient who meets the guidelines for hospital service.  Patient Access staff ensures that all data entry is accurate including demographic and financial information for each account.  Patient Access has numerous procedural requirements including data elements, insurance verification, authorization for services, and collections for all patient portions including prior balances.  Patient Access staff is responsible for the successful financial outcome of all patient services. Patient Access is responsible for ensuring the hospital maintains compliance with Federal regulations, JCAHO, and Department of Health and Hospital compliance standards. Patient Access communicates directly with patients and families, physicians, nurses, insurance companies and third party payers.  This position requires professional appearance, and behavior, good communication and effective organizational skills.  Patient Access representatives require dependability, flexibility, and teamwork

    II.           QUALIFICATIONS:A.    EDUCATION:1.     High school diploma or equivalent required.2.     Successful completion of the core educational curriculum “Excellence at the Front End” required within one year of employment.  B.    EXPERIENCE:1.     Two years experience in Patient Access, hospital registration, medical office, billing/collection functions, or a comparable customer service related position preferred. C.    LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:1.     Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) through National Association of Healthcare Management (NAHAM) required. D.    EQUIPMENT/SKILLS:1.     Excellent communication and organizational skills.2.     Demonstrate excellent customer service skills.3.     Must be able to follow detailed instructions and perform repetitious tasks.4.     45 wpm typing preferred.5.     Computer/basic keyboard skills, telephone skills, and general knowledge of office machines   including printers, fax, copier, scanner, and credit card machines required. 6.     Proficient in office automation applications such as Microsoft Office preferred.  7.     Interpret and analyze data. 8.     Ability to read, comprehend and retain information.9.     Perform mathematical calculations proficiently.10.  Knowledge of basic medical terminology preferred.11.  Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.   E.     WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:1.     See Physical Requirements
