Pharmacy Technician Job Description (updated June 2010)

Spanish speaking preferred 

Position Summary: Assists the pharmacist with the technical and clerical aspects of dispensing prescriptions as well as the business aspects of running a successful pharmacy business.


A.      Prescription dispensing

•          Level I duties:

-          Obtaining the drug from the shelf

-          Scanning the product chosen from the shelf to ensure it is correct.

-          Counting or measuring the specific quantity of the product

-          Placing the product in the appropriate container

-          Affixing the correct label to the container.

-          Follow appropriate Key Retailing promise times so the pharmacist knows which prescription is next to be verified.

-          Process prescription refills through the computer system.

-          Attend technician training

•          Level II duties:

-          All the duties of a level I technician

-          Successfully complete the Level II Technician Test, also required by law

-          Obtain all information required to process a prescription and establish a medication profile (name, address, date of birth, telephone number, physician, medication allergies, and prescription insurance information).

-          Enter the prescription and the patient’s medication profile into the computer accurately and efficiently.

-          Successfully adjudicate the claim to the third party payor.

-          Solve payor related issues and document unresolved issues to inform the patient.

-          Following the appropriate Key Retailing promise time procedures so the “dispensing” technician knows which prescription is next to be prepared.

-          Help manage queues (prescriptions)

•          Level III duties:

-          All the duties of a level I and II technician

-          Answers questions from level I and II technicians to prevent pharmacist interruptions

-          Fax doctor call requests to physician’s offices

-          Complete MTM (Medication Therapy Management) training requirements

B.     Inventory Control

•          Level I duties:

-          Select the appropriate wholesaler for ordering products.

-          Place drug orders through the secondary wholesaler.

-          Send prescriptions to Central Fill when appropriate.

-          Receive and process drug shipments and shelving the products.

-          Pull outdated and overstocked items from the shelves.

•          Level II

-          All of the duties of a level I technician

-          Create/edit/send and receive drug orders from the Kroger Warehouse and other facilities as needed

-          Review all drug orders, quantity on hands, and minimums for accuracy.

-          Process the required paperwork after a drug order is received.

-          Update inventory when orders are received (receive orders)

-          Use Med-Turn to process drug returns through the Kroger warehouse (overstocks and outdates)

•          Level III

-          All of the duties of a level I and II technician

-          Process and return all outdated, recalled, and overstocked product to the appropriate wholesaler.

-          Assist with inventory and business related paperwork as directed by the pharmacist.

C.     Clerical

•          Level I duties

-          Performs receptionist duties (i.e. answers all telephone calls and greets customers)

-          Handles customer’s inquiries on where to locate an item in the store.

-          Makes appropriate referral decisions on customer requests, questions, and needs that require the professional expertise of the pharmacist.

-          When directed, acts as an intermediary between the patient and the pharmacist (i.e. presenting the offer to be counseled by the pharmacist).

-          Handles all cash register transactions

-          Handles the Signature Capture Device to electronically capture a customer’s signature and HIPAA forms at will call

-          Operate cash register and completes all training required to run register

•          Level II duties

- All duties of a level I technician

-          Running the POS (Point Of Sale) Report and handling un-sold prescriptions

-          Maintains records on daily and weekly prescription volume and sales

-          Performs 24 hour Post Dispensing Audits each day

-          Investigates and resolves problems with rejected prescription claims including resubmitting claims (handling the adjudication exception queue)

-          Ordering pharmacy supplies from the appropriate wholesaler.

•          Level III duties

-          All duties of the level I and II technician

-          Assists with pharmacy scheduling as when directed by the pharmacist.

-          Runs any necessary reports

-          Helps maintain pharmacy records as required by state and/or federal law

-          Help handle all MTM (Medication Therapy Management0 paperwork, scheduling and communication with patients

D.      Housekeeping

•          Level I

-          Follows and understands the Key Retailing Five S procedure for pharmacy cleanliness

-          Ensures that the pharmacy is neat and customer ready at all times (clean windows and counters and waiting area)

-          Keeps the pharmacy stocked with prescription vials, printer paper, auxiliary labels, forms, and other necessary supplies as well as emptying the trash.

-          Rotates drugs on shelves

•          Level II

-          All duties of a level I technician

•          Level III

-          All duties of a level I and II technician

E.     Customer Relations

•          Level I

-          Behaves in a caring, respectful, and courteous manner toward customers and positively represents the Kroger corporation

-          Responds to customer complaints in an empathetic and responsible manner, making a reasonable attempt to assist the customer with complaint resolution

-          Assures the confidentiality of patient information.

-          Understands appropriate way and time to involve the pharmacist in any situation.

•          Level II

-          All duties of a level I technician

-          Assures that the patient is knowledgeable of third party payment rules.

•          Level III

-          All duties of a level I and II technician

F.      Work Habits

•          Levels I, II, and III

-          Promotes a pleasant, professional work environment through personal appearance and cooperation with co-workers.

-          Displays reliability with respect to attendance and punctuality and reporting of absences

G.     General

•          Levels I, II, and III

-          Promotes and contributes to achievement of the goals and objectives of the Pharmacy Department, the store, and the corporation.

-          Communicates operational problems and suggestions to pharmacy manager and assistant pharmacy manager.

-          Performs other related duties as assigned.

Pharmacy Technician Job Specifications

Education/Experience: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. No experience necessary. Training occurs on the job.

Requirements per law: Must pass a drug test. Must be fingerprinted.


•          Level I

-          Superior interpersonal and verbal communication skills

-          Skilled in cash register operation

-          Attention to accuracy and detail

-          18 years or older

•          Level II

-          All skills of a level I technician

-          Typing and computer skills

-          Ability to read a prescription

-          Working knowledge of drug product names

•          Level III

-          All skills of a level I and II technician


•          All Levels

-          Will report to the pharmacy manager and in his/her absence to the assistant pharmacy manager.

Physical Demands:

•          All Levels

-          Must stand for prolonged periods of time

-          Must be able to lift medium-sized boxes of merchandise

-          Must be able to reach down to 6 inches above the ground and reach up to the height of 72 inches

-          Must have the manual dexterity to work with prescription vials and type prescriptions accurately.

Working Conditions:

•          All Levels

-          Will be required to work day, afternoon, and evening and weekend shifts.
